Quarter Final

N Kasmar 122, J Terry 34, J Chick 33

Georges River

261
J Terry 2/27, C McKay 2/33, B Morgan 2/38

Warringah lost by 20 runs.

We arrived at Weldon greeted by a very good wicket, with a tinge of green and elected to bowl first.

Cal and Roy started us off and were on the money from ball one with early opportunities in the field not being taken and taking one each in their first spell. Roy finding the edge, with Chicka taking a good, low catch and Cal executing plans as though they were mapped out for him. Cookie was in and out of the attack quickly due to breathing difficulties after being on a respirator in hospital the night before but having nothing at all to do with returning from Vegas earlier that week.

The bowlers toiled hard in good batting conditions whilst a partnership built between the opener and number four batsmen. Morgs coming on after lunch finding the edge and inside of the bat from both batsman to get two quick wickets in two overs, Wakker also finding the middle of Morgs nose with a classic stiff arm during celebrations. Morgs was awarded a medal from Nick for remaining standing during the encounter.

Spin twins Jay and Mol bowled in tandem creating regular chances and cleaning the tail. 260 to chase.

Rocking up Sunday with slightly damper conditions with the clouds clearing looking to chase down the total already at 0/60. Jay getting given out from a possible edge early and then a partnership building between Kazzy and Chicka.
Jarrod committing the first cardinal sin of the day by hitting the first full toss off the leg spinner into catching hands. This trend continued whilst Kazzy continued his innings, playing extremely smart cricket and playing shots everywhere and along the ground. Wakkers hammy had decided to give up and go home after carrying a massive load with him also creating a cardinal sin by hitting a full toss in the air. With Kazzy building small partnerships with everyone as the score board ticked over. We got within 20 runs until that man Kazzy who worked so hard all day devastatingly created the final cardinal sin of the day, by hitting a full toss to the fielder. With Morgs picking up a devastating Kazzy off the floor he earned the right to raise his bat with applause and appreciation from his supporters and the other team. 122 off 252 balls, well batted Kazzy.

The change rooms after the game obviously felt like a wake and after receiving some constructive words from Steve and Cookie it was time for a beer. The boys have learned some valuable lessons in finals cricket, which will no doubt be implemented next week, when we take on Burwood in the Semi next week at Ron Routley.

Quarter Final

Warringah won by 53 runs.

Upon arrival at the ground you could feel this was now do or die cricket. Toss went up and Ruben the prophet calls it right and sends us into bat. Weather was overcast and the ball was moving around which lead to an early collapse for the men in green. Both openers were out cheaply, followed by Richo (4) and Lachie (4) who were batting 4 and 5.
This left Warringah in a spot of bother at 4/38. However, Singhy stood tall during that tumultuous period and was joined at the crease by a familiar face, Tully (these two only just a couple of games ago put up a 155 run stand against Lindfield). They would once again go on to provide a match defining and season saving partnership. Tully (76) with his delectable sweep shots and Singhy (63) with his poise and patient shot selection proved too good for Balmain. Their stand of 106 was ended rather abruptly with Tully being caught trying to push the score on.
Singhy was joined by Sen (7), but not for long, leaving the game poised at 6-160. The remaining 4 wickets fell for a measly 10, leaving the MIG all out for 170.  Our tail unfortunately lacked the ability to wag due to some good bowling and fielding. Kuch was left stranded on 0*.
The view of the group was we were about 50 runs short of par. However, mood was lifted once the ball got into Harry Burke’s and Singhy’s hands. With minimal time allowed for warm up we were back on the field needing to bowl 26 overs to end the day. Singhy (2/11) just coming off a stoic innings with the bat lifted himself off the floor to opening the bowling. He got our first breakthrough with a top edge ending up in the safe hands of one Liam Filmer-Ramsey. Burkey (4/34) got stuck into his work and quickly followed up with a wicket of his own the very next over; a caught behind chance being taken by our man in the gloves, Toohey.
Burkey’s next over though was when the momentum truly swung back in our favour. With the new batsmen still yet to get off the mark Burkey would catch his edge and offer up a chance at second slip which was sharply taken by the skipper Ruben. The ‘Ringah boys were fired up, Burkey was throwing out high fives like hot cakes and woohoo’s were ringing around Frank Gray. Two balls later the new batsmen mistimed a shot straight to gully where the flying Kuch took flight and took a nice diving catch; scenes ensued. Burkeys 2 wicket maiden was another crucial moment season saver. We rode this wave through till stumps that day with more wickets coming, and even a hattrick opportunity from Tully after a rarely seen double of lbws (2/39). At the end of the day Balmain fell to 8/102.
On day 2 the key breakthrough came by way of Liam Filmer Ramsey (2/24) taking the batsman doing all the damage for Balmain. They soon were bowled out for a total of 117.
Warringah were sent back into bat and thanks to starts from all of the top 5 batsmen there was never any worry about Balmain winning by way of 2nd innings. Warringah won by 53 runs move onto the semi final.

Quarter Final

Warringah

O Goldsworthy 154, R Jayaram 44, R Osbourne 37

North West Sydney

R Tipton 4/34, C Wilson 3/38, M Norton 1/17

Warringah won by 100 runs.

First week of finals for the boys this week saw us take on North West at Mike Pawley.

We were having a bat first which saw Norto and Rohit open the batting. The boys got off to a good start with Rohit scoring 44 which set us up pretty well. After that display of batting, coming in was Goldsy who had an outstanding knock scoring his second hundred for the MIG'S. Goldsy scored 154 off 188 balls. Goldsy played with no fear and an injured shoulder for half of his innings but still outplayed the opposition bowling attack. This performance put 4s in a really confident spot throughout the rest of the day. Also backing him up was Ryan who made 37 which had those 2 at a partnership of 94. Wilso also had a solid knock towards the end of the day scoring 31 which started to really frustrate the North West side as the runs just kept on going.

After facing 90 overs we were all out and had 3 overs to try and get some wickets before the end of the day. Some great bowling from Wilso and Roache but we were unable to get any wickets. A great day for the boys and a real test for North West coming into sunday needing 314 off the 96 overs.

Starting the day strong again were Wilso and Roache with some good bowling which was all to good for North West with Roache getting the first pole of the day with a yorker. Wilso was all over them seeing them play and miss 1 and every couple of balls. Robbie then came onto bowl which saw him take the next 3 with a great slips catch from Ryan. Wilso and Ryan were into bowl after which saw them have a great partnership which were really restricting there runs and seeing the pressure build. This was all to much from North West seeing them lose 4 wickets between these 2. After this we were well into the tail but we not taking chances with a couple to many drop catches. North West had a decent 10-11 partnership but Norto was to good for them which saw us get the win on the ball before tea.

A great game it was which gets us a home semi against Burwood.

Quarter Final

Warringah

6/57
W Cunningham 20*, Extras 16, C Dickson 7*

Strathfield

55
W Cunningham 4/10, P Clift 4/14, J Conners 1/13

Warringah won by 4 wickets.

It was a day where patience was tested, tactics were questionable, and sawdust became the unlikely hero. Warringah’s 5th Grade side turned up to Epping Oval full of energy, only to spend over two hours contemplating the mysteries of life (and the weather) as the pitch resembled something closer to a slip-and-slide than a cricketing surface. Strathfield, desperate for a game of cricket or perhaps just an outing to Bunnings, took matters into their own hands, returning triumphantly with sawdust in tow.

With the pitch eventually declared somewhat fit for play, the match was reduced to a 25-over slog. Captain Clifty, winning the toss and sensing an opportunity, sent Strathfield in to bat. From the sidelines, Beachy was unimpressed, gesturing to the bowlers to pull out a fake dive during their run up to emphasise to the umpires that the pitch really was unplayable.

Once the action began, Warringah wasted no time turning the sodden pitch into a Strathfield nightmare. Will Cunningham and Captain Clifty led the charge, each helping themselves to four wickets, as Strathfield struggled to navigate the conditions. A flurry of wickets later, they were back in the pavilion for a mere 55 runs – a total that might have been defendable had the game been played in a swamp.

Chasing just over two an over, Warringah looked comfortable in theory but managed to keep things interesting. Strathfield, making the most of the treacle-like outfield and sticky wicket, ensured scoring was harder than it should have been. Wickets fell at regular intervals, and the tension in the Warringah camp grew. Thankfully, Harvey and Will steadied the ship, nudging the chase along with a much-needed partnership.

As the finish line approached, Cooper dispatched the winning runs in the 22nd over, securing Warringah’s spot in the semi-finals. A win, a game that nearly wasn’t, and a newfound appreciation for Bunnings’ sawdust range – all in a day’s work for 5th Grade cricket.

Final place on the table: 12th

It's Round 16 of the Metropolitan Cup during the MIG Summer 2024/25 season, the final match of Warringah's season. We faced off against Bankstown Cricket Club. The match showcased several standout performances from Warringah's players, reflecting the team's resilience and competitive spirit. Warringah's bowlers delivered a commendable performance, restricting Bankstown to a modest total. However, despite a resilient effort from Warringah's batsmen, they fell short of the target, resulting in a narrow defeat.

Warringah's bowlers initiated the match with vigor, aiming to curtail Bankstown's batting lineup. There were remarkable spells throughout the match, applying consistent pressure on the opposition. effectively dismantling Bankstown's middle order. Their combined efforts were instrumental in restricting Bankstown to a total of 138 runs. Warringah made it to 8/118 overnight, as our innings encountered early setbacks with the loss of quick wickets, which kept coming. We fell short of the chase by just 3 runs, despite heroics from some of our young MIGs.

We sent Bankstown back in and to their credit they batted positively and set a total, their innings of 8/165 gave the MIGs the daunting but possible task of chasing 169 to win in 32 overs. At 2-77 we were a chance, but the loss of regular wickets from this point on meant batting out the match was the best we could hope for.

Particularly good was Warringah's fielding, which was commendable, executing catches and a pivotal run-out that shifted the game's momentum temporarily in their favor. The team's cohesion and determination were evident throughout the match, reflecting a collective commitment to excellence.

While the match concluded in a defeat for Warringah, the individual performances of our young MIGs highlighted the team's potential, fighting spirit and a bright future.

It's off season now for the MIG-Chaps. They had a great first season in green, ending up in 9th spot just outside of a finals berth.

Frankie's season is wrapped. Grand Finalists in 2024/25, a great season from our U24 Greenmen.

Next match: Sunday 16 March vs. Strathfield at T.B.C.
