October Round Wrap 1

October Round Wrap 1

Our first round wrap of season 2022-23! And action packed it is. We won't bore you with the details of the washed out, rain impacted games - we're all sick of the wet weather I'm sure. So we're just going to focus on the good stuff, which is Warringah Cricket is back! Before we get into it, we would like to acknowledge our sponsors, in their various capacities, in how they have supported our club. Your contribution is invaluable to making our great club what it is.

Please support our club sponsors however you can.

The first full round of cricket we played was against Roseville in the main grades, Gordon in Metro and Pennant Hills in our expansion side - 5th grade. We've had some interesting matches against Roseville in the past. Let's briefly revisit them:
- Last year 1st Grade were knocked over for 133 chasing 166, with Tully Moffat's 59 going in vain.
- The 2021 2nd Grade side won comfortably over Roseville, 9-170 vs 142, thanks to Jarod Colyer's 57, Luke Parkinson's 5-27 and Lachie Molyneux's 4-31.
- 3rd Grade were victorious, with a hard fought 103-51 win (seems like a basketball score doesn't it?), with not much to talk about in the batting but Charlie's Wilson's 3-6 ripping the heart out of the Roses' chase.
- 4th Grade also won, with a 152 vs 95 scoreboard - runs hard to come by but Ben Cook's 3-18 off 10 led the way for the MIGs.
- Last year's Metro team, the eventual premiers, were overpowered by Gordon (1-76 vs. 71).
- And this is our first 5th Grade side in sometime, so there's no previous result to reference here.
So a mixed round, but one Warringah is eager to improve on. Here's the scoop...

Warringah

191 (53 overs)
Johnson 36, Kharwadkar 34, Ahmed 33

Roseville

5-199 (62 overs)
Wigney 2-34, Vinter 1-31, Ahmed 1-38

Warringah lost by 5 wickets.

After a few wet weeks in a row, first grade showed up to Weldon for their first home game of the season. Batting first, WCC got off to a shaky start losing a wicket in the first over of the day. Hamish (23), Daz (33) and Barney (19) all added valuable contributions as they went about steadying the ship, however a middle order collapse saw the boys fall from 2/80 to 6/100 in quick time. Johnno (36) and Nikhil (34) came together and went about rebuilding the innings, batting beautifully in putting together a 60 run partnership for the 7th wicket, before the tail added a few more quick runs to get the score up to 190. While maybe slightly under par, the boys were confident it could be defended.

The boys got off to a slow start with the ball, struggling to force breakthroughs as Roseville grabbed hold of the momentum. Ollie Vinter (1/31) picked up the first wicket however, despite some quality spin bowling from Nikhil and Ronnie, Roseville batted patiently to push the score up over 100 for the loss only 1 wicket. Daz (1/38) and Nikhil (1/60) took wickets in consecutive overs to have Roseville at 3/105 and wrestle back some momentum for the WCC boys. However some defiant batting, along with some missed opportunities in the field, gave Roseville the upper hand once again as they put together another 60 runs for the 4th wicket. A couple late wickets to Wiggers (2/34) were ultimately a consolation prize as Roseville passed the total 5 down.

Warringah

278 (64.5 overs)
Chapman 72, Grace 59, Broome 33

Roseville

144 (57 overs) & 69 (30.4 overs)
Molyneux 4-23, Gerry 2-24, Powe 2-32 &
Molyneux 6-10, Kelly 2-0, Gerry 1-11

Warringah win outright by an innings and 65 runs.

2nd grade arrived at Roseville Chase on an uncharacteristically sunny day. They were greeted by a flat pitch, a rapid outfield and a friendly toss. Even after losing opener Davo early, spirits were still high. They only got higher throughout the first session as all the batters got involved. There was some boujee batting by new boy Jasper Grace (59). But it was Paul Chapman (72) sweeping the opening bowler that brought the biggest cheers from the fans. Chapo was the stand out performer with the bat, anchoring the innings so others could show off around him.

Returning international cricket superstar Kale Gailba (30) spanked the spinners down the middle of the nearby fairway for a handful of big sixes. Veteran TK continued his good form with a quick 21 to have the MIG sitting pretty at 4/182 when he departed.

Debutant, and energiser bunny Ky Broome flew to 33, cashing in on the early work from his teammates. So too did fellow debutant Ben Cook (19) and Gus Gerry (24), whose valuable lower order contributions took the final score to 10/278 off 65 overs.

This left 14 overs to bowl in the evening, a very fun proposition for the MIG. Despite a few of the fielders' hands being mysteriously replaced with cymbals, WCC ended the day in a dominating position. Buckling the roses to 3/35 at the close.

The forecast for week 2 was not promising, but the skys couldn't save the opposition from the mighty MIG this time. The bowlers ground away in the first session, taking sporadic wickets to have Roseville 7/135 at tea. A debut wicket in his first over for Ben Cook (1/19) was the #1 highlight. But the session led by workhorse Blaney Powe (2/32 off 16) who's constant threat really eased the pressure on the other bowlers..

Three lightning fast wickets after tea, including 2 in 2 balls from Lachie Molynoux (4/23) secured 6 points for WCC as Roseville were bundled out for 142. Everyone had a strong day with the ball, the Gus Bus (2/24) settled into some reliable routes along with Ben Cook who looked right at home in top grades. It was a very strong performance with the ball but with only 36 overs left in the day, Roseville supporters laughed off Warringah's decision to enforce the follow on. The MIG had other ideas.

I could tell you about Gus's early breakthrough, TK's 2/0, or Davo's diving catch, but there's only one story from the final 30 overs of the day. Lachlan Molynuex. 12 overs, 7 maidens, 6 for 10. Molly ended with 10/33 for the match to absolutely steal 10 points for the good guys. Jaffas galore, thousands of men around the bat, wheeling away wicket celebrations. What a performance! How good is cricket!

Warringah

4d.-323 (67 overs)
Chick 117, Johnston 92, Donato 52*

Roseville

105 (51 overs) & 6-124 (39 overs)
Thompson 4-30, Caruso 2-4, Evans 1-2 &
Watts 1-5, Caruso 1-8, Wilson 1-10

Warringah won on 1st innings by 218 runs.

On a lovely Saturday the sun finally emerged and the b3asts of 3rd grade were finally able to get a full game of cricket in at Frank Gray oval against Roseville.

After winning the toss and electing to bat first on a traditional Franky wicket the green men had a sound start with the openers having a steady start. The loss off Matty Evans early (8) opened up the opportunity for big Chickos to work his magic. After a dedicated and consistent preseason, the young man had a solid 50 run partnership with Housey (12) before linking up with his fellow St Augs alumni member in Charles. What followed was a great partnership shaped around putting the bad ball away and being positive against the good ball leading to a 169-run partnership, with Chickos ending on a beautifully crafted 117 and Charles with a classy 92. With the b3asts at 4-241, Rubes (52*) and Watto (28*) combined together to finish the job nicely to allow for an attacking declaration at 4-323 after 67 overs. An average stint of 12 overs in the field allowed Roseville to get to 0-34 at the close of play.

Day 2 arrived and a rejuvenated and energised Warringah side came ready with the prospect of a dominant win on the cards. A couple of early wickets to Vic(tory) (2-4 off 7) got the Warringah men into the game and from then on looked in control. What followed was a “foot on the jugular” type effort from the men in green to clean up Roseville for 105, lead by an impressive display of off-spin bowling from Seth (4-30 off 9). With first innings points secured, the boys pushed for an outright win and got off to a strong start with 2 early wickets in the first 4 overs keeping the boys very interested. However, a dominant partnership between a couple of the Roseville lads fizzled out the opportunities and even with a couple of late wickets to Watto (1-5 off 5) and Seth (1-21 off 6) the boys ended up shaking hands with only first innings points secured.

All round a great effort from the green b3asts and an almost perfect way to get the season going, there’s a few talent lads to keep your eye on as we look to get another win at home next round against the defending winners of 3rd grade last season north west.

Warringah

255 (61 overs)
Downs 76, Norton 61, Verma 54

Roseville

185 (50 overs)
Day 3-17, Rowse 3-28, Burke 2-58

Warringah won by 70 runs.

The people's grade finally began their defence of their premiership on the field last weekend against Roseville, and off to a great start our season is! Our returning skipper Kev winning the toss and sending us in to get some runs on the board. And that we did. The 4s put up a great first total of 255 with special highlights from Jimmy Downs, and Mitch Norton both getting their first 50s for the club and respectively ending up on 76, and 61, Harry Verma ended up on 54 and other contributions around the grounds from the rest of the team. We had many debutants for the team this week and each contributed in their own areas to assist with our first win of the year.

On the bowling and fielding side, our team was tremendous with the ball with Pat Day taking 3 wickets, the big Rowser taking 3 as well and Harry Burke took 2 in his debut for 4s. one of their batsman clocked up 100 runs and then Roseville began getting a lead on us and when the game felt like it started to slip away from our grasps, Lewis Beard fresh off his tour for the Australian deaf international T20 championships castled him to bring the MIGs straight back on top of the game. Then straight after our tea break we took 5 quick wickets to finalise our first win of the season.

Warringah

161 (??? overs)
Woodhead 41, Martin 34, W Evans 25

Gordon

1-190 (??? overs)
Buchanan 1-25

Warringah lost by 9 wickets.

After the first 3 weeks were called off due to rain, our Warringah Metros side was finally set to defend our 2021-22 title. Things started off well with Captain Warren Evans winning the toss and deciding to bat on a flat wicket. Both openers struggled to get any rhythm going, with both Noah (0) and Luke (11) getting Bowled. A solid 34 from Billy Martin got the MIGs back in the contest, but the wickets kept falling and we were struggling to keep batters at the crease. With a mixture of tight bowling and some poor shot selection, Gordon kept finding ways to send us back to the sheds. Some cameos from Zac (15) and Robbie (12) who went out with the intent to put up a respectable score. The tail wagged with Warren (25) and keeper Andrew ‘Woody’ Woodhead (41) who both got the score up to 161 after 50 overs. The story of the innings was that 7 batters were bowled out.

With 24 overs to bowl to the Gordon side until the end of play on day one, our opening bowlers bowled a tight aggressive line with some close calls and missed opportunities. Zach Buchanan ended up taking the only wicket before the end of the day with some beautiful catching by Matt. End of first day finished with Gordon 1-71.

Day 2.

With only 90 runs required for the first innings lead and 9 wickets still to take, our bowlers knew that we had to bowl aggressive. With batters playing with a defensive mindset this would be difficult with such a small total to defend. The Gordon batsmen took their time and had reached the 161 total from 55 overs. No other wickets were taken with the highlight of the day being Ollie, Robbie and Warrens tight consistent bowling and the Gordon Captain scoring a 102*. The Gordon side batted up until 1-190 calling it a game with no real chance of a 2 innings result.

Warringah

1-129 (??? overs)
Labrador 62*

Pennant Hills

128 (??? overs)
Bennett 3-20

Warringah won by 9 wickets.

Our newest Warringah team has already managed a few matches, somewhat miraculously given the weather. In Round 1 they scored a win against Epping (151 vs 118). In Round 2 they were overpowered by North West Sydney (9-124 vs 1-125). Their Round 3 match against Lane Cove needed to be abandoned. In Round 4 they dominated against Balmain-South Sydney (1-92 vs 91) to notch their second win. And the match you will read about below, was their third win. Great start for our new youth expansion side. As for the match...

Winning the toss saw the lads bowl on a slightly wet wicket. Roy bowled tightly, often beating the bat, giving nothing away. Aiden Bennett started slowly but found his range and snared three wickets. Patty Brown came on and bamboozled the Penno captain, bringing the dangerman to his knees. Their opener played a lone hand, proving to be the thorn in our side. With Harley, Harry, Dan and Patty all bowling tight spells, sharing 4 wickets. Restricting Pennant Hills to 129, the job was made more difficult with five chances put down.
Harley and Dusty started the chase against a very spirited, vocal and tight bowling attack. The openers carving a fantastic hundred run stand before Harley unluckily glanced the ball to the keeper. 47. Their stand involved some stoic defence blended with aggressive counterpunching. A cameo from Rish saw the game won in the 35th over and Dusty remained not out on 62. The whole team contributed to a very impressive win. The boys displayed considerable grit and skill to overcome a motivated Pennant Hills outfit. Well done!!

The World Health Organisation (WHO) The United Nations agency working to promote health, keep the world safe and serve the vulnerable, have today announced that they will be sending a study group to Warringah Cricket Club. On Sunday, WCC Masters were able to field a fully vaccinated team. Despite recent claims in the media that vaccinations have not been offering immunity, WHO are investigating fresh claims that the vaccinations ensured these 11 men were unable to catch anything.

Stand in Captain, Brady won the toss and elected to bat first. Despite working all week for StarTrack Express, O’Connor (1) was unable to deliver on a weekend and departed early. Apparently, we can expect delivery sometime between 6am and 4.30pm next Thursday, but one of us will need to be there to sign for it.

Captain “Dravid” Brady (18), who was thoroughly enjoying his weekend hobby of building dry stone walls, was then joined by Barnett (30) Fun fact: The term 'Barnet Fair', normally shortened to 'Barnet', is popular cockney rhyming slang for 'hair'. Neil didn’t disappoint. He looked “Trim”, played positively whether the delivery was “short, back or sides” and had a “good cut”. Alan “Ned” Kelly (30) strode confidently to the crease with his “good as new” Knees. The South African outlaw looked magnificent wearing a suit of bulletproof armour during his final shootout with the Roseville bowlers, but despite despatching a few of them he was always likely to perish and not make it to retirement.

A flurry of wickets followed, which saw Harris (0) mistakenly identifying his batting partner as Usain Bolt and “Lucky” Livio (0) picking out an unvaccinated Roseville fielder. Surely Lucky’s day could only get better…Debutant Guy (Gravies) Davies (20) joined Dolby 2.0 (44*) at the crease, and the pair struggled to find oxygen in the middle of Frank Gray. Apparently, Ned Kelly had sucked in most of it whilst earlier turning threes into twos.

A couple of lusty blows followed from Frenchy (12) before he failed to “ferme la porte” and said “au revoir” to his middle stump. Smart cricket from debutant Dazzler (4*) and not so smart cricket from Edg(0) saw a final total of 166 set for Roseville to chase.

The skipper was clearly still hungry after the break and decided to open the bowling with French (Fries) and Gravy. A tasty combination. The opening batters for Roseville of Mears (40*) and Giles (20) carefully picked away at the fries and gravy until Mears had eaten enough and went for a sit down. Giles then got greedy when Edgo arrived with the pies. It was simply too much on his already full plate. No doubt he will be signing up for weight watchers and counseling this morning.

Lucky then stuck, removing Rose (7) by hitting the stumps. Lucky’s day is on the up…With the spread laid on in the middle, it was inevitable that we would see a fair bit of Saliva (40*). He came to the crease at number 4 and tucked in.

However, it was during this passage of play, post drinks, that Saliva, Burge (26), Murphy (15*) and Wood (10*) decided to form a syndicate for all future Lottery draws, Horse Races and Tipping Comps. With more put downs that a Warringah Masters report, with the ball being harder to hold onto than the keys of 10 Downing Street and Lucky failing to realise that in Master’s you simply must hit the stumps to get a wicket AND despite the incredibly high levels of fitness, speed, agility and presence of mind of the fielders, 7 of the WCC ranks managed to grass chances. Lucky bowled 9 overs taking 2 for 43, with a strike rate of 1 drop every 7 balls.

Despite the loss the bowling unit did a great job. But the old adages are never wrong: “Catches win matches. Masters need glasses”

A fun day out with a game played in great spirits by good blokes and, I’m sure, a few sore bodies today. Strangely, reports are filtering through that as many as 7 of the team are unavailable next round. Having mysteriously received significant six figure deposits into their accounts from an offshore betting syndicate, a spokesman for the “Shelling 7” today announced that “due to unforeseen circumstances, certain players would be recuperating in the Caribbean for the foreseeable future”

Warringah

5-211 (40 overs)
Park 33*, Barnett 32*, Howard 32*

Balmain South Sydney

170 (39.2 overs)
Park 4-14, Waddington 3-28, Edwards 1-25

Warringah won by 41 runs.

Our Season was due to start on the 8th Oct but the whole round was washed out so the the majority of the Classics lads decided to spend their Sunday afternoon and the $40 match fees at the Dee Why RSL. This can be viewed in two ways, giving a little bit back to our main sponsor as well as team bonding. A cracking good afternoon was had by all and possibly more enjoyable them some of the matches we have played.
Finally the rain cleared away and Sunday the 16th October was to be our first game of the season, away at the very picturesque Jubilee Park against Balmain South. Everyone was raring to go. Waddo, the consumate professional, had even been for an early morning net, while Phill had forgotten to bring his trousers.(not his everyday trousers that would be ridiculous and he would have been arrested) , but his playing trousers.
Chris OB was the first to go and probably got the best ball of the day (this is what he told me) then Howard, Barnett and Waddington all scored 30 at a reasonable click and were able to retire. At the half way stage (20 overs) we were a hundred odd for the loss of one wicket and three lads back in the sheds on 30 NO. For the last 20 overs Barrow and Park both scored 30 NO and the only batsman to actually go back in was Rick, with 2 balls to face and 4 wickets remaining. As he strode to the crease I jokingly said " I bet he blocks the first ball”, this is exactly what he did. Why? I am not even sure if Rick knows why. After our 40 overs we were 209.
By now it was mid-afternoon and a few people who were enjoying the sun had stopped to watch our game. One particular gentleman, who had actually been sat next to the site screen from the start of play, was heard to regularly shout out advice. I am not sure how sound this advise would have been as he had the look of someone who had been drinking heavily.
Waddo and Phill opened the bowling and Phil nicked off the opener with a very smart bit of juggling from Dave Nimmo who caught the ball at the 2nd attempt. Also a great effort from Phill playing in borrowed trousers and full skins on his legs (very sweaty)  Waddo had a very sharp chance go down in the slips. Great effort by Rob Melchiore but he just couldn’t hang on. So far Rob was not having the best day out, he scored a duck with the bat and had a dropped a catch to his name but he was soon to redeem himself with a great spell of bowling. He used the slowness of the pitch to his advantage and and tied the batsmen down and deservedly claimed a wicket.
Our new recruit Chris Stolk flung himself about in the field and got stuck right into the game, a great effort. Generally, everyone fielded well. Mike Barrow tended to day dream a little but that’s something only he can work on but as we are all into our 50s I have my doubts about this changing. The only slight blemish on the day was a couple of dropped catches by Simon Lyon, who normally has an extremely safe pair of hands. I think the blame for this has to go partly down to our captain who had Simon stationed near the boundary where a rather attractive young lady was sitting. Simon was put in an almost impossible position and clearly could not focus 100% on the game.
Balmain were running out of overs and the run rate was heading north. As they tried to hit out Waddington came back on for a second spell along with Park, debuting his non spinning off spin. Rick took a fantastic catch behind off Waddo, this was by far the highlight of his day and was far happier with this than scoring his 30 runs. Park and Waddington shared the remaining wickets. Balmain all out for 170.
Everyone had a great day out and managed to do something in the game. The opposition were a top bunch of lads and the captain of Balmain had the most beautifully manicured moustache that I have ever played against.
Fingers crossed that the bloody rain subsides and we can do it all again in two weeks time.
