October 2024 Round Wrap 2

October 2024 Round Wrap 2
Welcome to the BYE round for some and the action round for others!

Far from a round off and never far from the action, the last two weeks only saw a few of the Men In Green on the field. Grades 1-4 had the BYE round, so spent two weeks training hard and working on their fitness (or possibly their golf game, their suntan or their skills on PS5). But 5th Grade and Chapellow Cup had two games each, Metro Cup started a two day match, Classics got their season underway, and Masters played their second match of their 2024/25 campaign. Read on for the results and recap.

The MIGs also spent a night with Paddy from Tomorrow Man. Outstanding, exceptional and invaluable are words that come to mind to describe the workshop and how we engaged in it as a club. Thank you to the committee and parents for sausage sizzle to satiate our bellies, and for Tomorrow Man for filling our minds up with the right stuff. The MIGs were left smiling, despite being challenged with some real questions about real things. Those that were there will speak highly of the night and how it leaves not only a lasting impression of the value of powerful conversations, but also how they feel empowered to help their mates. Thanks for organising Tania and Steve of the Well-Greens!

A few snaps of the MIGs from the Tomorrow Man workshop, run by the legendary Paddy!

Round 3

115
Z O'Sullivan 28, C Conners 25, S Higgins 18

North West Sydney

4-119
J Conners 2-17, L Gleeson 1-46

Warringah lost by 6 wickets

5th grade were sent into bat on a grassy, green surface where both Harry and Alfie were cleaned up leaving MIG with early pressure. Seth and Zach consolidated quickly with several boundaries to their names however both unfortunately getting themselves out. Stu and Caleb looked promising however a couple misjudgements lead to Warringah spiralling down a tough hole to get out of. Unfortunately the boys with their best efforts only scraped to a very modest 115 getting bowled out on a very quick Frank Gray outfield. With not a lot to play with Jess Conners was the highlight for the bowlers, finishing with 2-17 from his 7 overs. A wicket to Lucas and a runout from Seth however was not enough as North West Sydney comprehensively chased down the 115 in just 22.4 overs. A poor performance from a strong looking 5th grade side however the MIGS will look to turn things around next round.

Round 4

Warringah

3-253
H O'Sullivan 103, A Gatehouse 95, Z O'Sullivan 40*

Lindfield

72
C Dickson 4-3, H Cruickshank 2-14, J Conners 2-17

Warringah won by 181 runs

With the heaviest of the rain seeming to have avoided curlcurl on Friday night, it was great to turn up to Frank Gray and see the fieldin pristine condition.  The deck looked‘well grassed’ but as as we all know, that’s just a ploy to catch out visitingcaptains!  After everyone had a look, andmuch discussion during the warm up, stand in skipper Clifty took on board theurgings of his top 5 bats that they wanted to have a hit, won the toss, andtold Alfie and Harry O to stick the pads on.

What happened next was wonderful to watch.  Whilst the wicket took a little bit ofpatience to get ‘in’ on, Alfie Gatehouse and Harry O’Sullivan set about theirwork with gusto.  The steady start saw us0/40 after the first ten overs with the lads bringing up their 50 partnershipin the 12th over.  They steadilyincreased the run rate all the way up to drinks seeing us 0/97 at the mid-pointof the innings.

From this point, the boys took off.  The 100 run partnership cam up in the firstover after drinks, and the lads took 61 off the 9 overs after drinks to takethe union to 158 from 172 balls before Alfie fell for a fine 95 from 105 balls.A superb partnership brought  about bytwo perfectly paced innings, well done to both lads for this effort.

With  11 overs toHarry was joined by brother Zach and two kept the pressure on Lindfield  The boys put on 46 from the next 32deliveries to have us 1/204 off 34 overs when the first rain interruptioncame.  It was only a short 20 minutebreak this time and didn’t seem to throw the Sully’s off too much carrying onthe onslaught at the resumption with Harry brining up his century with a magnificentstraight six taking him to 103* off 100 balls in the 39th over.  He was dismissed for 105 at the start of the40th with the 85 run partnership coming from 63 balls.  Seth made 3, sacrificing himself going for athird run to get Zack back on strike.Ziggy took 4 off the last two balls tofinish 40 not out from 32 balls and the MIG with a formidable 3/253 from our 40overs.

With the weather still threatening and coach Steve in ourears, the first goal was to get through 20 overs so the match counted.  We opened up with Cooper Dickson and JessConners and they were both well a truly on song from ball one.  Cooper was bowling with great pace seeingCaleb taking the ball infant of his eyes most deliveries and Jess was gettingseem great movement.  Jess trapped oneopener in front in the second over before Dicko uprooted stumps in the 3rd andfifth overs to have Lindfield 3/9.  Jessgot his second with a catch in the gully to have them 4/14 in the tenth and4/20 when we went off fro rain at the start of the 11th.  The delay wasn’t too long and saw us lose twoovers only and a new target of 241.  Cooppicked up his third to a sensational diving catch by Harry Campbell at backwardpoint, and the his 4th a couple of balls later to finish his spell of 6 overswith figures of 4 for 2.  Jess bowledanother after the rain to finish with 2 for 17 from 6 overs.

Harley and Harry C replaced the openers with Lindfield 6/22off 12 and not too much changed.  The twolads bowled some good lines and lengths in the first couple of overs eachbefore a few lose ones saw Lindfield move to 6/42 off 18 before Harley struckwith two wickets in three balls.  Cliftyreplaced Harry who finished with 0/14 from 3. The skippers first ball went sailed to cow for four with some intentfinally shown by Lindfield after 20 overs. At the other end, Harley finished with 2 for 14 from 5 overs.  Cooper was thrown the ball again after hismandated rest to try and get his 5 fa. Clifty took one at the other end to havethem 9/61, and despite a string of fiery yorkers from Dicko, he couldn’t breakthrough, giving away one run from the 12 balls to finish with the incrediblefigures of 4 for 3 off his 8.  Cliftyended with 1/15 from 3 and Seth came on to take the last ending with 1/3 fromhalf an over to bowl Lindfield out for 72 off 25.3 overs.

A great win by the lads set up by a batting unit who knewwhat they wanted to do, and finished off by some wonderful fast bowling fromCooper, Jess and Harley.  Well done lads!

Round 3

Warringah

228
R Jayaram 55, H Matheson 44, M White 35

Strathfield

149
A Durairaj 4-8, O Fairchild 2-37, O Hansen 1-20

Warringah won by 79 runs

In a thrilling contest at Mike Pawley Oval, the Warringah boys convincingly overcame Strathfield, securing a well-earned victory. Strathfield won the toss and elected to bowl first, putting Warringah in on what seemed to be a solid batting surface. Despite early setbacks, with Oscar, Zach, and Harry falling cheaply, the reliable Matt White and Rohit put on a masterclass of a partnership. Together, they amassed 95 runs, impressively rotating the strike and running hard despite the cold winds. Once the spinners came into play, both batsmen showed aggression, putting pressure on the opposition before Rohit was caught for a solid 55 and Matt departed soon after for 35, leaving the game in the balance again. As wickets continued to fall in the middle overs, glimpses of brilliance from the middle-lower order kept Warringah's hopes alive. Harvey Matheson stepped up with a mature and crucial knock of 44, partnering with the tail to scrape together a total of 228. It was a competitive score, but the boys knew they had to bowl smartly to defend it.

Carlo and Oliver opened the bowling with tight, disciplined lines, preventing Strathfield's batsmen from gaining momentum. Although the opposition batted intelligently early on, keeping the contest even, the introduction of both Oscars at either end applied the brakes on their scoring.Momentum swung in Warringah's favor as Oscar S. and Oscar H. picked up key wickets, leaving Strathfield under pressure. This was then followed up again by Ollie, Carlo and Jimmy who not only bowled good areas, but when the opposition looked to take them on were able to confidently stick to their plan and push for the result they wanted. Ash then came on and produced a superb spell, taking 4/8 in just 3 overs to quickly dismantle the opposition’s lower order. With Strathfield bowled out for 149, Warringah clinched the victory by 79 runs. It was a hard-fought win on a cold day, and the team deeply appreciated the support from everyone who came to cheer them on despite the chilly conditions.

Warringah won by 16 runs

A superb day for another game of Cricket! After a tough loss last week we spoke about where we needed to improve as a unit. We needed more intent with our running between the wickets as well as quick singles to put the field under pressure. We also needed to be much better in the field and own our own “patch” in the field. And that we did! Catches win matches and today was a much better effort! We won the toss and elected to bat as we know we can defend our totals.

After a promising start, the intent was there to push the fielders, however unfortunately losing Finn Sorohan early to LBW. In came Lucas Clarke (44) who in partnership with James Pike (26) steadied the innings for a while and got us going with some great gap hitting. The outfield was slowish so we started hustling and turned 1’s into 2’s and 2’s into 3’s. Freddie Schneidereit did that brilliantly which set the tone for the back end of the innings. Cooper Vickery (14) was looking set before top edging one back to the bowler. From this point on we needed to push hard to the end to get over 150. Nixon Kolodzinski (6), myself (11n.o) & Will Cunningham (31 n.o) all pitched in to get above the 150 mark which we knew we could defend.

The target for Pennant Hills was 157.. The defence…From the get go we bowled well, but Pennant hills were playing their shots and were staying on track with the run rate. Dan Carroll (3-14) got the early wicket with a brilliant catch by Will Cunningham. We took wickets and a regular rate, but the runs were still flowing from Pennant Hills (stand & deliver) strokes or should I say “haymakers”.. At drinks the game was evenly poised. Lucas Clarke (2-17) bowled superbly stemming the run rate in tandem with Freddie. A great catch by Cooper Vickery got the momentum back in our favour. The game was starting to get tense & we had to bowl Pennant Hills out if we were to win.Ethan Crookwell kept well taking some key catches too through out the innings. Sensing  the change in momentum we brought Will (2-31) back on and got two quick wickets! Then finally in comes the Leg Spin of Harrison Fear (3-14) who had the batsmen in all sorts & ultimately destroyed the tail in quick fashion!

The boys dug deep as a team today during some tough “momentum swings”  believed all the way until the end to get the victory! The Team Song was in full swing once we got back to the sheds! Great win lads!

The team song ringing out following the victory from Vickery's crew

Round 4

Warringah

9-101
F Schneidereit 30, F Sorohan 23, W Cunningham 13

Pennant Hills Panthers

2-102
L Clarke 2-22

Warringah lost by 8 wickets.

The day started off fairly well…the warmup was great…Then came time for the toss…The opposition hadn’t arrived yet when suddenly they emerged from the bushes…Anywaywe won the toss and elected to bat.Unfortunately, the game from the start was a struggle..Pennant Hills had a good bowling attack with some decent pace clean bowling our first 2wickets for not many… We knew we needed to get a move on but the line and length of thebowling was too good for us. We couldn’t get many runs through the field and the quicksingles weren’t being taken in the first 20. At drinks we were 2 for 40 odd. Not good enough. After drinks the intent certainly picked up, however their bowling was tight and we simply lost wickets too regularly! Finn Sorohan (23) and Freddie Schneidereit (30) helped us to ameagre 102 runs.

The equation was simple. Take 10 quick wickets! We got 2… Lucas Clarke (2-22) That wasit. Very hard to defend 102. Pennant Hills were very good.. We were outplayed. BUT there is always next week! Heads up lads.

We will bounce back!

Hawks Masters

D Brady 4-21, C Wyatt 3-22, G Davies 2-23

Warringah won by 52 runs

Our round 2 Masters match has the boys making a toll-laden trip out to Benson’s lane, Richmon. The Hawkesbury Grade cricket club grounds were going to be a bloody nice place to play cricket with a beautiful rural setting and mountainous backdrop. Before proceedings, we were astonished to learn that the most recent floods experienced in the area had water levels rising upwards of 13 meters from ground level. One of the Hawkesbury boys told us that he was able to drive his tinny to the clubhouse and stand on the roof (which is two stories high).

BJ (Ben Johnston) was finally able to break his coin tossing curse and sent us in on a wicket that thankfully didn’t have any long-lasting effects from flood damage. DB (David Brady) and Buckets (Greg Allsop) looked solid early before the latter fell to a ball that nipped back through the gate. The wicket was tricky early on and the Warringah batter’s patience was regularly tested. Unfortunately, 4 more wickets fell in quick succession leaving us struggling at 5 for 47 and needing something special. Enter Bambi ‘I like to turn 3’s and in 4’s (Chris Wyatt) and Deano 'Where's the Defib’ (Dean Harris) who got together and put on a display of batting that defied logic. Both men smashed the Hawkesbury bowlers to all parts and their running between wickets was exceptional. As was the size of the boundaries, Bambi was happy to take full advantage and push Deano for an all-run 4. To counter this, Deano went into beast mode and decided that hitting 4’s was much better than having to run them.

Bambi retired with a blistering 41 off 29 and Deano battered beautifully until he was caught for a well-made 31 off 33. BJ and Deano #2 (Dean Storey) also put on a handy 40 run partnership, elevating our score to 160ish. When BJ fell for a well-played 24, Bambi returned to the crease. Having been inspired by his beloved NY Yankees progressing to the World Series, he was able to launch a massive hit for 6 down the ground, bringing up a blistering 50 and putting us in the box seat with a solid total of 179. Deano #2 finishing with a very handy 18 no. We started our fielding innings on fire. Gravies (Guy Davies) and Bambi ‘I haven’t had a pre-season yet’ both jagged an early wicket each which had the Hawkesbury players frantically rushing to their changeroom. Unfortunately, we couldn’t capitalise on our strong position, putting down a gettable chance that would have cemented our position and given us a stronghold on the game. Hawkesbury took their opportunity, and the next 2 batters built a solid partnership that took their score to 2 for 73 at the drinks break.

Knowing that we needed early wickets, BJ gave one of his inspiring and rousing speeches/ rev-ups that had an immediate impact on his chargers. Our bowling line- up consisted of 4 spinners and if we were going to get back in the game, we needed them to play a big part. Deano #2 in his first game for the MIG kept things tight with his left arm ‘BJ-like’ offies and was unlucky not to snag a wicket. Paul ‘Clifty’ Clift showed that he has a future bowling seam up as he baffled the batsman with a variation of seam and spin. Will still needed wickets to turn the game. DB was thrown the ball by his captain and produced one incredible spell of spin bowling. The big fella was fired up for the occasion and ripped through their middle order cancelling any hope that they would chase down our total. DB finished with impressive figures of 4/21 of his 8 overs. Bambi was reintroduced to the attack and with contributions from BJ and Gravies were able to clean up the tail. Bambi finished with MOTM figures of 3/22 to go with his outstanding effort with the willow.

The MIG were able to take the final 8 wickets for only 50 runs and bowl the opposition out for a measly 127. Not a bad effort from the Men In Green with only 10 players on the team sheet. A very satisfying victory indeed!.

Round 1

Warringah

5-221
N Barnett*, D Harris 30* , D Jeffs 30* , R Trewartha 30*

Nepean

8-176
R Melchiore 2-17, T Waite 2-38, S Lyon 1-25

Warringah won by 45 runs

Finally our first match of the season had arrived, against Nepean at Mike Pawley Oval. It’s great to see that everyone from last season has returned plus a couple of additions but we were without Waddo, the man who has played 6 games a week for the last six months all around the globe. Never one to normally miss a game I think he must have been under strict instructions not to miss his Aunties birthday. As I arrived at the ground it was nice to see that some things never change. Stolky had made his usual magnificent fruit salad and Simon Lyon took immediate charge of removing the covers. Our captain was a little late (possibly tactically, to avoid getting involved with the covers) but got the first big call of the season correct and we were batting.

Roscoe had a new partner in debutant Al Kelly (welcome aboard). Both were going along quite nicely when Al went to cut a ball and unfortunately played on leaving us at 1-28. Neil joined Roscoe and pushed hard for a few more singles and it wasn’t long before Roscoe retired after yet another effortless display. DJ was next in and continued to play diligently. Both he and Neil batted very well with both retiring . At the half way stage in our innings we were about 1-90.  Stolky and Deano decided to swing the willow to up the ante. Stolky perishing after making a brisk 10, losing our 2nd wicket (2-123) and Deano hit a sublime 30 not out hitting just about everything out of the middle. Rick marched to the crease and showered us with an array of shots including a reverse sweep and a fantastic 6 that kept the crowd entertained until he eventually fell on 28 (3-187). This season our Classics team boasts 2 current Australian Internationals, Waddo and Cliffy. As already mentioned Waddo was unavailable so this left Simon Lyon as the star atraction. A major disappointment, to all of his fans, was that he didn’t turn up sporting his baggy green and Australian blazer (maybe next time). Cliffy actually batted as well as I have ever seen him bat. He kept the whole impetus of the inning moving with some fantastic timing and superb running between the wickets and hit a very well constructed 14. Next in was our new big money off season signing, new ball opening bowler Troy Wait who played selflessly for the team before perishing for four. That left Allsop and Park to finish off the inning playing extremely selfishly for themselves to ensure that not one of the retired batsmen could return and eventually the MIG ended up with with a very respectable 5-221.

Last season Nepean defiantly raised the bar when it came to game day food. Now we knew that we could never beat them on the food front but we really did up our game with a top dollar spread. Maybe we could go with a little more savoury next time.2023-24 bowling award winer Mr Greg Allsop opened up from the construction end with a difficult cross wind to deal with and his partner in crime from the Housing End, Waity taking his first Classics wicket when he snicked off the opener to first slip Al Kelly who took a very nonchalant catch. Good to see the two new lads combining well. Nepean were very much in the game continually managing to find a four ball most overs. Park and Jeffs were introduced and managed to slow the run rate and at the half way mark Nepean were ahead of us on 1- 110. Drinks were taken and our keeper Rick departed for Dubbo with Al picking up the gloves. Just before we resumed Captain Barnett gathered his troops and had our undivided attention for his many wise words on how we really needed to up our game. Suddenly, and due to no fault of his own, he lost every one of us as an absolutely stunning young lady ran past. As a group we can only apologise as our actions were incredibly unprofessional and if the same situation were to arise I can say with hand on heart we would all do the same again. From the 20th over onwards we bowled and fielded extremely well. Stolky has to merit a mention as he was superb, continually throwing himself all over the place. Talk about rolling back the years. A major turning point in the game came with two run outs in consecutive balls. First Deano with a stunning throw from the boundary right over the stumps followed by captain Barnett with an equally good throw. Incredible considering we don’t do any fielding practice. I don’t think Nepean hardly hit a four from the 20th over onwards. Every bowler kept it tight but Rob Melchiore was the pick, returning figures of 8 overs 2-34 and ably backed up by Cliffy. Great way to kick off the season against a good bunch of lads and finished off with a few welcome beers. See you all to do it again in two weeks.
