October 2024 Round Wrap 1

October 2024 Round Wrap 1
Righto - round 2!

It's a bit early in the season for a Grand Final, but when it comes to the club championship a round against Burwood is considered just that - finals level cricket. In the last 3 years we have twice knocked firmly on the door of the reigning club champions, coming down to the last round to decide it all. 3 years ago rain robbed us of the opportunity to play off for the coveted Dave Tribolet Trophy, losing to Burwood by just 5.5 points. Last year we played Burwood in the final round of the season, and they got the best of us in all grades. This year, it's just round two and there's a LOT of cricket to be played, but Burwood are the team to beat and the MiGs need to be on song.

So, round 2 sees us take on Burwood in grades 1-4, 5th Grade get their season underway aganst Strathfield, UNSW in the Metro Cup, the other Auburn side in the Chappelow Cup, and Masters and Classics have the weekend off to sail, golf, lawn bowl or whatever it is they do. Let's get to the action.

This week and next week are also big Thursday nights for the club. This Thursday is our first club BBQ, which is well-timed with the bye-round approaching. The following Thursday is Tomorrow Man - one of our club's Wellbeing initiatives. Attendance for players is as compulsory at it gets, for your own good!

Come one, come all - our first club Presso for season 2024/25.

Round 2

Warringah

112
J Stearman 47, J Gore 16*, S Barnett 11

Burwood

2-113
J Stearman 1-7, M Munro 1-45

Warringah lost by 8 wickets

Following a close defeat the previous week, the boys were keen to rip in at the home of cricket Weldon Oval and get the season away on a beautiful sunny day in Curl Curl. Having set the ground up and taken the covers off, the lads warmed up, and after losing the toss, were sent in by Burwood to kick the game off.

From the get-go Burwood was dominating our top order, quickly removing Hamo and Davo. Jack and Barney managed to put up a fight and scratched their way to 2-47, but Barney's dismissal saw our batting lineup crumble, as Burwood's spinners tore us apart. Jack offered the lone highlight, watching the wickets crumble from the other end whilst carefully constructing his own innings, balancing finesse and power to make his way to a superb 47. Our other pom Joe also dug deep, managing to finish on 16*. Despite Jack's excellent innings, we had been skittled for 112, a disappointing score.

We knew we would need a mammoth effort in our bowling innings to offer any chance of defending our total. As we headed into the bowling innings, the heat seemed to bear down on us even stronger, and the pitch was sucked dry of any moisture otherwise present. Despite this, morale was high, and the boys walked out to field with a glimpse of hope. This hope was quickly extinguished, as Burwood's openers played with aggression to get on top of our opening bowlers before they could settle in. Three quicks Joe, Roy and Patty toiled away to no avail, struggling to find any movement or pace on a flat deck. Jack (1-7) was introduced into the attack, and a strategically placed half-tracka almost off the pitch found the edge of the openers reaching bat, and Chicka took a smart catch behind the wicket. Munners bowled exceptionally in difficult circumstances, taking a well deserved wicket to end up with (1-45). Burwood ended up cruising to the total having lost only two wickets.

Despite putting on a solid performance with the ball and in the field, we never had enough runs to defend. Although a disappointing loss, hopes are still high for the season, especially with 2 weeks off to put in the work and prepare for our two-dayer against Epping in 3 weeks time.

Round 2

Warringah

7-212
L Johnson 70, J Terry 56, C McKay 35*

Burwood

103
S Cook 3-17, L Filmer-Ramsay 3-20, J Terry 2-7

Warringah won by 109 runs.

On the back of a disappointing round 1 loss, 2s were looking to bounce back strong against Burwood. Losing the toss we were sent in to bat and had trouble early. Jimmy edged one to the keeper in the 3rd over, Singhy copped a possibly dodgy LBW in the 8th, Broomey tried to smoke a Yorker in the 9th, and Richo was just short of his crease coming back for a second in the 10th. (He was probably safe). Jay had been sitting comfortably at the other end and in comes Johno at 4-27. These two batted superbly together, putting away the bad ball and running very well between the wickets. Jay fell first ball after drinks at 56 with the score 5-120. Cooky put on 9 before he was gone and Cal came in to put on some quick runs with us in a solid position. A helpful partnership came to an end with Johno getting caught at 70 with the score 7-177. Liam and Cal put on some more quick runs, Cal finishing the innings 35 off 33 and Liam 13 off 9. A great fight back from the boys, particularly Jay and Johno, having us finishing with 212. A special shout-out to the bombs Johno and Cal hit.

Coming into the field with momentum we wanted to bring as much energy as possible. Our openers Cal and Wigs started wonderfully, restricting the batsman well aside from some streaky edges. Our first two wickets came from Cooky, getting the openers out LBW and caught. Wigs had their captain LBW and they were in trouble at 3-27. Spin came on, restricting runs whilst taking consistent wickets, 1 for Molly, 2 for Jay and 3 for Liam. Cooky came back on taking the final wicket, getting Burwood all out for 103 which should result in a bonus point. An overall great effort with everyone bringing a great energy and intensity to win the game.

Round 2

Warringah

5-168
R Donato 87, N Kasmar 20, S Murata-Davison 15*

Burwood

9-167
T Walker 3-37, H Burke 2-31, M Kuchel 2-34

Warringah won by 5 wickets.

A match against Burwood and Warringah is always a good one, but a grand final rematch from last year added a bit of extra fuel to the fire for this 3rd grade clash. Burwood decided they would favour runs on the board, and with that Burke and Roache had the kookaburra in their hands to start the game off.

Burkey didn’t waste any time to get into his work, snicking off the opener for nothing. Burke and Roache combined superbly, and whilst Burkey got the early results with the ball (2/31 off 10), Sam ‘bowling machine’ Roache (1/14 off 10, including 3 maidens) refused to steer away from a good length and applied a mountain of pressure on the opposition who couldn’t settle into their innings. Spin twins Kuchel (2/34 off 10) and T Seward (0/11 off 5) combined well to keep the momentum in our favour in the middle to late overs, allowing Walker (3/37 off 10) to send down some late thunderbolts. He mixed up his lengths superbly and provided the Burwood tail with a couple of bruises to the rib cage and arms to remember, allowing the run rate to remain controlled and restrict Burwood to 167.

Seward and skipper Donato led off the chase. After losing Seward early, Donato (88) steadied the ship by applying pressure back onto the bowlers with some aggressive hitting down the ground. Kasmar (20) joined him at the crease to combine for an 80 run partnership which put the game well within favour of the green men. The hottest man in shires, Sentarou Murata-Davidson, got a handy 15* for the average to finish off the game, with Tom Walker by his side ending on a notable 0*(8).And with that, 3rd grade are 2 from 2 and will look to continue their form after the 2-week bye.

Round 2

Warringah

5-303
W Akhurst 120, Z O'Sullivan 55, M Melville 39*

Burwood

134
Rowse 3-30, M Melville 2-45, R Tipton 1-20

Warringah won by 174 runs

Last Saturday, the mighty 4th grade Men in Green set off tothe scenic pastures of Ron Routley Oval to face Burwood. The day began with abang as Captain Kev, clearly feeling lucky, won the toss on what could only bedescribed as an absolute road of a pitch. Naturally, we chose to bat—becausewho doesn’t love a Saturday spent piling on the runs?

Leading the charge was none other than Will Akhurst, whoprobably wasn’t expecting to make history with a borrowed bat, but hey, sometimes magic happens with someone else's stick. His maiden century was amasterclass, ticking off 124 glorious runs. If Will’s borrowed bat wasn’talready a hot commodity, it sure is now.

Joining him in the run-fest was Zach O’Sullivan, who made avery neat 55, proving once again that the O’Sullivans are officially the new"Run Factory" of Warringah. With both brothers starting the seasonwith fifties, it seems the family dinner table might now have a "fifty orbust" policy.

A powerhouse partnership worth 152 between Will and Zach setthe tone, but the fun didn’t stop there. Matthew "Squash" Melvilleshowed his knack for finding the gaps, and his late hitting was a spectacle.Add to that some sprightly running between the wickets by "Rhino"Osborne—who, despite his nickname, was moving more like a gazelle than arhino—and the scoreboard was pushed to a commanding 303.

Burwood looked confident coming out to bat, but thatconfidence was quickly misplaced. The fireworks started with an Ollie Higginsdirect-hit run-out that could’ve been mistaken for a laser-guided missile. Fromthere, it was a bowling feast, with Robbie and Norto grabbing crucial wicketsto keep Burwood in check.

But the real show was "Old Man" Rowsey, rollingback the years and picking up three scalps of his own. His crowning moment? Asharp stumping that showcased the lightning-quick hands of keeper CalebConners, whose reflexes could make a cat jealous. As if that wasn’t enough,Captain Kev—never one to be left out of the fun—nabbed himself a wicket, thougha dropped catch cruelly denied him a second. One can only imagine the sarcasticapplause from his teammates for that one.

In the end, Burwood crumbled for 134, and the Warringah 4thgraders strutted off the field with a well-earned win, notching up 2 from 2 asthey roll into the bye. A dominant performance from the lads, and the onlything left to wonder is if Will’s borrowed bat will be seen in his kit nextmatch.

Round 2

Warringah

83
R Rulli 26, Extras 14, H Kirkham 11

Strathfield

157
J Conners 4-17, H Matheson 2-25, L Gleeson 1-23

Warringah lost by 74 runs.

It was a bright and sunny day at Airey Park, and the 5ths were looking forward to start their 24/25 season strongly. This game marked quite a few debutants for Warringah, some coming from other clubs and some coming from the Manly rep system. All the players were very excited and humbled to be a part of this team and were looking forward to a great day of cricket.

After going through the warmups, Warringah lost the toss and fielded first. We knew that we had to bowl some troubling lines and that our fielding should be aggressive and hunting for wickets. After five balls in the corridor, Harry trapped the batter plumb in front and took the first wicket of the season. In the first over! Jess bowled the next over and immediately whipped the ball into the pads, resulting in another LBW! Warringah knew how important this start was and then started to get fielders up close to try and apply more pressure. Harvey was then brought into the attack and second ball sends the stumps flying. Jess persisted with his terrific line and length and took a stunner of a catch off his own bowling to get the set batsmen out. He then bowled a ball that cannoned into the stumps to leave Strathfield struggling at 5/33. Leg-spinner Oscar then partnered with left arm orthodox Lucas, and they provided a tight spell however the opposition batters started to get the scoreboard moving for this wicket. After a solid partnership by the batters, Paul got the breakthrough by doing the batter in flight, resulting in him chipping the ball high in the air and Harvey taking a good catch. Warringah persisted with the spin and Lucas got one to dart in the clean up the batsmen. Jess, the star bowler of the day, came back on and the batsmen skied a high ball, and Harvey ran around and secured the catch comfortably. After the batsmen reached fifty, Harvey bowled a beauty of a ball and sent the stumps rocking back. Then, the batsmen tried to take on Jess’s arm, but he expertly underarmed the ball into the stumps, running the batsmen out. Warringah bowled Strathfield out for 157, a great bowling performance.

Warringah knew that partnerships would be key to chasing down this total. Openers Rohit and Harvey strode out to the middle, determined to bat long and score the required runs. Unfortunately, it wasn’t to be, as Rohit was dismissed second ball, LBW. Darcy then came in but knicked off, with the slip fielder juggling the ball but eventually securing it. It was now Rocco’s turn to bat, and he was looking he goods, taking his time and trying to get the scoreboard moving. Harvey took a couple of twos but then slashed at a wide ball and got caught at point. Beau came in and smashed a cracking pull shot to the boundary. Then, he played another pull but mistimed it and got caught by square leg. This wicket brought Oscar in, who crunched a cover drive to the boundary early on in his innings. Rocco was looking rock solid, respecting the bowlers but was ticking over the strike when the opportunity presented itself. Oscar was unlucky when he smashed a ball straight to mid-off, leaving Warringah five down for only about 25 runs. Captain Stu walked in and partnered with Rocco. Both of them accelerated the run rate and were stealing twos and running hard between the wickets. But then, Stu and Rocco had a mix up and that led to Stu being run out. Harry joined Rocco and was scoring runs freely. Rocco then got caught at mid-wicket playing a pull shot for a hard fought 26, a lone hand in this innings. Paul walked out to the middle but was unlucky when he knicked off, a good catch by the wicket keeper. Harry then departed by chipping a ball in the air. Lucas played out a lot of balls and worked over the singles, but Jess then got bowled, and Warringah were all out for 83.

It was a tough game for Warringah, as we fought to the very end. However, there were many positives throughout the match, with Jess’s 4 wickets, Rocco’s 26 and Harvey’s 2 wickets and 2 catches. Hopefully next week, Warringah can rectify their performance and have a glorious season.

Round 2

Warringah

191
M White 52, Z Dowthwaite 27, S Thompson 24

UNSW

3-192
W Graham 2-29, L Coy 1-6

Warringah lost by 7 wickets

Round two in metropolitan cup brought a unique battle with UNSWCC. Throughout the day, the boys were faced with a range of situations which required strong mental fortitude and stamina. Electing to bat first at home on Mike Pawley, a decision made easy due to excessive runs scored on the same pitch throughout the previous weeks, Whitey won the toss.

Opening up with H McCracken and L Coy, a tricky opening stint from UNSWCC’s quicks led to two early wickets: both openers departed. A great partnership between Z Dowthwaite (27 runs) and M White (with an excellent 52 runs) got the boys over the 100-run mark. Following on with a late surge of runs produced by S Thompson (24) and B Kwan (23), a score of 10/191 was reached and the Warringah boys headed into lunch. From the UNSWCC team, a great young spinner (Y Chaudhari) of 15 years of age was the highlight of the bowling attack, taking 3/17 off 10. As the Warringah boys finished our post lunch stretches and took to the field with a score to defend about 50 under par.

We faced a tricky opening partnership. The two strong UNSWCC batsmen with strong offside tendencies created momentum, however these two were dismissed by W Graham, the man on debut, who took 2/29 off 10. A great performance under a strong batting side. However, the UNSWCC middle order produced a 100-run partnership to really take them over the line, with runs awarded to S Mukhopadhyay (56) and S Vajhula (60*).  The final wicket taken by the Warringah boys, by L Coy (1/6 off 6) broke this partnership, but it was too late, as the UNSWCC boys got over the line at 3/192 with just over 5 overs left over. A good effort for the MIG’s to restrict the run flow, however, a tough battle in the field resulted in a frustrating loss. Thanks to the umpires, scorers, parents and players. Congratulations to both the MIG’s who performed well and also to the UNSWCC boys for a great game of cricket. Bring the rest of the season on!

Round 2

Warringah

7-175
L Clarke 73, W Cunningham 42, F Sorohan 28

Auburn Gold

5-190
O Hansen 2-23, D Carroll 1-31, F Schneidereit 1-35

Warringah lost by 15 runs

Well, it was the perfect day of weather for a game of Cricket! We knew coming into this game it was going to be a tough assignment, however the boys were up for the challenge! We lost the toss and Auburn elected to Bat. After a solid opening stance Auburn were looking good and saw off our opening bowlers. It took a screamer in slips (pure fluke really) by the captain off the bowling of Oscar to break the partnership. At drinks we had Auburn where we wanted them, however after the drinks break Auburn accelerated & unfortunately chances came,  but we dropped our catches which cost us 20 to 30 runs in the field. The boys rallied & fought back in patches stemming the run rate to keep Auburn to 5-190.

The run chase…
We were looking good early off to another steady start with Finn (28) contributing well at the top. We started to fall behind the run rate slightly, however Lucas played a great innings (73) to help keep us on track. We were still well placed at the drinks break but a couple of quick wickets by Auburn had us on the back foot for a while until Will (42) helped to steady the ship again in partnership with Lucas to help  provide what was a fantastic run chase effort. We however fell 16 runs short of the win, finishing at 7-175.I am extremely proud of the boys pushing Auburn right to the end.

Lesson of the day: “Catches win matches boys”. Until next week!...we go again!
