December Round Wrap 3

December Round Wrap 3
Welcome to the December 3rd edition and the final edition for 2022. Besides being a super positive round of cricket for the MIG, there's a few other awesome things we have to acknowledge first. WCC has been endeavouring to live up to its mission in being more than just a place to play cricket with great people, we want to contribute to the community that gives us life. So this week we have been busy helping out at our community partner - Northern Beaches OneMeal.

It's also the time of year that we, and by 'we', I mean EVERYONE celebrates a little. At Warringah, it's no different and we have Beachy (putting on a Prez shout!) and Deb to thank for a great night together to take us into the break. I mean, just look at this spread!

We would also like to keep in mind those in our community who might be struggling or enduring hardship. In particular our hearts and mind go to Lou Kuchel, Matty’s mum, who is battling Lung Cancer at the moment. It’s the lung cancer you get not from smoking. Lou has shirts for sale to raise awareness of this awful disease, and these are available at the club house on game days. The committee tried to be models for the shirts to help raise awareness with Lou.

On behalf of the entire WCC family we would like to send our love to Kuchels - Lou, Ash, Matt and Liam - hoping that you have a wonderful and happy Christmas together - and that the treatment does what we all hope it will. If anyone would like to donate to Lou’s clinical trial advocacy program here is the link:

LAST TIME...

As for the cricket, it's the December/January period which means more onedayers! The main grades faced off against Lane Cove, Metro took on Sydney Uni, 5th Grade were up against Mounties, and Masters played against Balmain-South Sydney. We left the standing results from Frank Gray and Classics in there not just to pad out the report, but to show a run of wins from the Men In Green of late. So the last time we played against these teams...
- Last year's 1st Grade were narrowly beaten by Lane Cove (178 vs 200), with runs and wickets shared around
- 2nd Grade were convincing winners (2-121 vs 117) thanks to Panda's 76*, and a couple of impressive spells from Addy (3-12 off 10) and Cal (3-18)
- 3rd Grade got up in their 2020-21 Grand Final rematch (3-116 vs 112), thanks largely to Priesty's 5-24
- 4th Grade were carried on the back on Cookie's solo effort (35 and 5-9), defeating Covvie's 144 vs 49
- Last year's Metro team defeated Sydney Uni Blue (270 vs 208) with Housey and Richo amongst the runs (84 and 58 respectively), and Harry Burke taking his first 5-for for the MIG (5-32)
- As you know, this is our first 5th Grade side in some time, so there's no previous result to reference here.
- The Classics' chaps haven't played the Sri Lankan Lions since their close loss 2 years ago, so a bit to avenge there
- Similarly, Master's haven't played against Balmain-South Sydney in a while, so they'll be keen to claim bragging rights on this one
- Finally Frankies are used to beating rivals Roseville, but the schedule didn't work out for a match last year, but the year before the boys got the job done (9-164 vs 83) thanks to Parko's 4-9!

So a round of results that are mostly in our favour, much to play for in the final match before the break. Here we go!

WARRINGAH

8-146 (50 overs)
Colyer 35, Greenland 24, Barnett 18

LANE COVE

144 (42.3 overs)
Ahmed 4-36, Wigney 3-32, Vinter 2-32

WARRINGAH WON BY 2 WICKETS.

Round 8 saw the MiG take on Lane Cove at home, closing out the final round before the Christmas break. The forecast read overcast conditions with rain scattered throughout the day, making a simple answer at the coin toss. MiG to bowl.

The perfect start, Daz taking top of off stump first ball of the game! Wiggers and Daz bowled extremely well to a quality Lane Cove top order and at 3-19, Hamo was pretty happy with his decision to bowl first. Small partnerships formed throughout Lane Coves innings but the mig kept the foot on the throat. 7-89 at the second drinks break, we were determined to roll the covies for under 150. The last few wickets always seem harder to get, with LC tail wagging. Ollie ( 10 overs 2/32) taking the final pole in the 43rd over. Daz finished the day with another 4fa (the 3rd on the bounce), Ronit (5 overs 1/12),(Wiggers 7 overs 3/32) and Nik (10 overs 0/24). The boys confident if we got off to a good start, 144 was a chasable total.

More drizzly rain fell over the innings break. The chase didn’t start a the boys had hoped, losing Hamo early due to some inconsistent bounce. Credit to Lane Cove- who bowled tight lines and set straight fields, making it hard for the mig to keep turning over the strike. We found ourselves in a bit of a hole, most of the batters soaked up lots of balls and the overs seemed to be racing by. All of a sudden the 3 an over from the start was creeping towards 5/6+ an over. 8/129 with 2 overs to go- 16 to win. Ronit and Wiggers at the crease. The boys managed 4 off the second last over before some seriously heavy rained pulled the boys from the field- the covers go on for the 7th time of the day. 1 over to go. I think that rain was a blessing as it gave us time to regroup and have a game plan. Once the short shower has passed, Wiggers was on strike, all he needed to do was get bat on it and take off- which he executed perfectly. 5 balls 11 runs Ronit on strike against one of the competitions best opening bowlers in Joe Scarcella. 5 guys on the fence. Ronit squeezed a 2 to deep mid. 9 required off 4 balls. Ronit slapped the next ball over forward point for a 1 bounce 4! An insane shot, I don’t think anyone has seen a shot like it at Shires level! 5 required off 3 balls. Scarcella banged the next ball into the deck and classic Ronit- (across the line slog) saw the ball flying towards the long boundary at cow corner, piercing the gap in the field and putting 4 more on the board. Score tied with 2 balls to go. ‘Just tap and run Ronit’ was the call from the sideline, as there were still 5 guys out. Ronit disregarded those orders and slapped another cross bat slog to cow corner, piercing the gap again. 6 points out of no where for the MIG. 2 wins on the bounce and some momentum into Christmas! 3,2 and 1 points go to Ronit- Hats off to you mate!!

WARRINGAH

9-225 (50 overs)
Panchal 99*, Powe 62, Cook 15

LANE COVE

173 (44 overs)
Parkinson 3-23, Outred 3-47, Cook 1-10

WARRINGAH WON BY 52 RUNS.

After a couple of tough losses and a spate of late changes to the line up, 2nd grade needed a big performance to take the 6 points.

New opening pair Blaney (62) and Chappo, hustled between the wickets early and set a good tone. But the key  partnership was between Rishi and Blaney, the pair adding over 90 runs to take the score to 3-144 at 2nd drinks. A slight miss fire from the middle order meant that no one other than no. 9 Cookei stuck around to support Rishi who ended the innings 99*. The MIG finished 8/225, a decent but not amazing total for Lane Cove to try and chase.

The Covies openers came out swinging, trying to cash in on the power play and hard new ball. Some early death style bowling removed both of them by the 5th over, but not before they had added almost 40 to the score. From then on it was a tug of war between Lane Coves stubborn number 3 and the WCC bowlers. Blaney, Cookie, Tejas and Rishi all made breakthroughs in the middle. Two brilliant bits of fielding; a jumping catch by Tejas and a leg side stumping by Jasper in the same Parko (3/23) over, cracked the game open for Warringah. Roy Outred returned to dismiss the still stubborn No. 3 and cartwheel the final batter to wrap up 6 points and a song for Warringah.

WARRINGAH

5-176 (34.4 overs)
Donato 46, Norton 44*, Morrison 38

LANE COVE

9-173 (50 overs)
Kuchel 4-24, Hatvany 2-29, Burke 1-27

WARRINGAH WON BY 5 WICKETS.

After moving next door to Mike Pawley for our game verse Lane Cove, we won the toss on a green deck, with cloud and rain about. Pat Day and Harry Burke took the new ball and applied the pressure early in tough batting conditions. Pat (0/17 off 6) bowled excellent line and length and was unlucky not to find a wicket to his name. Harry (1/27 0ff 10) bowled his overs in a single spell and used the new ball effectively. Charlie Johnston (0/20 off 6), Cooper Hatvany (2/29 off 8) and Tim Bourke (1/46 off 10) maintained some of the pressure established by the opening bowlers as the Lane Cove middle order began to play with more intent. After a long period without any wickets, it was Matt Kuchel (4/24 off 10) who turned the tide in the MIGs favour. Kuch bowled a consistent area, forcing the batsman to noodle him around the field… an unsustainable option when he is attacking the stumps. He was unlucky not to get 5fa, with a catch going down in the deep which would cost us a couple of runs in the later overs as Lane Cove got a couple of shots away. A solid bowling effort reduced the opposition to 9/173.

The skies had cleared for our batting innings as Noah Kasmar and Ruben Donato opened up the batting. A tidy catch behind the stumps off Noah’s inside edge saw him walking off early, and Jack Chick (12) a couple overs later. Kel Morrison (38) and Ruben (46) continued the chase well, punishing the bad ball to the fence (or over it). Following the dismissal of Ruben and Bourkey (13), Charlie and Mitch Norton were in charge of getting us across the line. Charlie (14*) ensured no more wickets fell, however the star of the MIG batting innings was Mitch’s 44* off 31 balls. Mitch came out with intent from ball one, taking any inconsistent length from Lance Cove’s bowling for boundaries with a powerful pull-shot and well timed drives.

A good day of cricket was wrapped up watching 1st grade get a nail-biting win over at Weldon, followed by the club’s Christmas party.

WARRINGAH

153 (36.4 overs)
Extras 36, Woodhead 34, Seward 26

LANE COVE

5-154 (30 overs)
Caruso 2-27, Rochford 2-48, Sharma 1-16

WARRINGAH LOST BY 5 WICKETS.

All the signs of a day of struggle were there - an overcast day, an away match over at Lane Cove, missing skipper Kev Davies, and we lost the toss. Before the the first ball was bowled there was a feeling like we had it all to do. We were put into bat, by the fattest skipper you'll see all year 😂. The prospect of short boundaries got the batsmen in our team excited. A solid start from V and Jimbo but a couple of quick wickets put us in a uncomfortable position. A bit of resistance from the middle order but a dodgy run out and a bit of a collapse left us with 153 all out after 37 overs. The lads kicking themselves for not making the most of the full 50.

Out we trotted to field with Mr Solid Caruso to open the bowling with the one and only Hershey! They stemmed the flow of runs and took a couple of wickets in the process. Caruso picturing himself in the heat of battle at the MCG for the Boxing Day ashes. His wicket celebration fitting of such a stage! A world class catch by Arch at second slip before drinks had us in high hopes but after a change of bowling and a fair bit of punishment from their team they put themselves in a commanding position and managed to get the total with just under ten overs remaining.

The lesson from the match... bat the distance and score big! But a few other highlights:
1) The main man - Archie talking an unbelievable right hand grab at second slip. What a sensational dive and one handed take... catch of the year! You won't see better.
2) A couple of pretty a big sixes from the top order batsmen.
3) They had cricket teas, but they were bang average 😂

Better luck next time MIGs!

WARRINGAH

3-166 (??? overs)
Downs 89*, Richardson 45, Kapoor 10

SYDNEY UNI

4-158 (??? overs)
Burgess 1-18, Melville 1-15

WARRINGAH WON BY 7 WICKETS.

The first bit of bad weather since the season got underway greeted us at MPO on Sunday. A soft patch mid way through a bowlers run up caused concern for the Sydney Unisiders and the game was delayed till about 2.30 where upon a 30 over game finally got underway.

Won the toss and batted, Jimmy Downs (89no) and Luke Richardson (45) got us off to a great start putting on 106 before Richo was bowled in the 22nd over. The pitch had a bit of movement in it so these boys did a great job seeing off their openers and progressively putting the foot down. It was Richos first game back from a broken toe so it was great to see he was still in good form. Jimmy was dominating anything short on the off side with some very powerful cutting and square driving.    We had a bit of a lull upon the wicket but Myles Kapoor (10) was busy with his running between the wickets and kept the scoreboard ticking over. Jimmy resumed normal business after a couple of quiet overs and finished the innings in style. Zac Buchanan had a quick cameo and first ball he played close to the shot of the day with a screaming square drive for 4.

All up 166 seemed an above par score but not knowing the opposition who knows?

Like us Uni’s openers batted very well and at drinks were 0/71 from 15. Tyler Mulcahy (0/35 from 6) and Lachie Jurcevic (0/32 from 5) did a good job but the batting was pretty good and anything in their zones they latched onto. After drinks we went through a very ordinary patch, and the game was slipping away but Matt Melville (1/15 from 6) bowled a terrific spell of off spin that really tied them down. Evans (0/24 from 6) combined with Matt to get us back on top. The run rate crept up and when we got the key wicket stumped by Dusty Labador from Matt we found some energy and we fielded and bowled well. Luke Burgess (1/10 from 2) got another crucial wicket well caught by Melville, chuck in a couple of run outs and we looked like winners with a couple to go.

Some lusty hitting though kept Uni in it and after a numbers mix up with the bowlers we threw the ball to the in form Jimmy Downs to win us the game needing 15 off the last. With the pace off Jimmy bowled a great last over to go for just 6 and topped off a great day for him.

Great effort from the boys today. I know a few missed out but the efforts of Zac O’Sullivan and James Olde in the field and Dusty behind the stumps were tremendous and appreciated. We probably put covers on/off 7 times between 8.30 and 2pm so the whole team deserved a pat on the back for not complaining. A bonus 6 point win as I know a lot of teams would have walked away from the game early on. Four in a row to the defending premiers!

WARRINGAH

2-152 (35.4 overs)
Gatehouse 77*, C Conners 30, Molinia 23*

MOUNTIES

9-151 (40 overs)
Cruickshank 2-18, Brown 2-21, Higgins 2-27

WARRINGAH WON BY 8 WICKETS .

This week, our MIG 5th Grade young guns travelled way out to Greenway Park to take on Mounties in our last game before the Xmas break.

If you take Reg the Skipper out of the equation, the average age of this lineup of MIG 5s would have been about 15!

The MIGs were bowling first, with Blacker and Zanella opening up and it wasn't long before Blacker struck, clean bowling the Mounties opener for 10. The skipper had plenty of bowling options up his sleave as they were all chomping at the bit to get the ball in their hands and after a solid opening spell, Higgins and Cruickshank chimed in with a couple of wickets to put us right on top.

Our leggies (Brown and H McCracken) continued the good work and were ripping them on a turning deck, both making breakthroughs via a stumping by Molinia off McCracken and a sensational outfield catch to Conners in the deep off Brown. With his partners dwindling, the Mounties opener, who had just reached his 50, decided to take us on but soon was forced to make the exceptionally long walk back to the Greenway Park sheds after snicking off to Higgins.  Cruickshank was in the wars after a blow to his knee and a ball to his "mid-riff" (or thereabouts) but recovered to finish off the Mounties innings for 151.

Gatehouse and O'Sullivan got us off to a flyer of a start and were looking really solid before O'Sullivan fell for 8. Conners and Gatehouse took advantage of the huge boundaries, running plenty of 3s and finding the boundary a few times. Conners kept the score ticking over with a quickfire 30 at more than a run a ball and Molinia's 23* really supported the outstanding, match winning knock of 77* by Gatehouse. Alfie continued his magnificent form this season, plundering all around the ground but particularly with a number of powerful pull shots.

The chase was successful with more than 4 overs to spare and these youngsters had calmly made their way to a very comprehensive victory.

These young MIGs keep marching on!

WARRINGAH

1-110 (21.4 overs)
Ahmed 49, Powe 42*, Moffat 11*

ROSEVILLE

107 (39.2 overs)
Mahajan 4-35, Molyneux 3-22, Wigney 2-9

WARRINGAH WON BY 9 WICKETS .

Following a disappointing result two weeks ago, the boys back at Weldon ready to make amends and put the rest of the competition back on notice, inspired by the leadership of stand-in skipper Tully.

Bowling first, Daz and Wiggers (2/9) started well, making scoring difficult for the Roseville openers before an early wicket had the score at 1/8. Not much changed as Vinter (0/15) entered the attack, settling in nicely to a consistent channel and bowling his 10 overs straight for just 15 runs. Despite only having taken one wicket at the first drinks, the 2 run per over scoring rate - with most of those coming off the edge of the bat - reflected a session well and truly dominated by the MIG.

Some pretty boring cricket continued after drinks as Roseville stuck with their defensive route and seemed defiant to even attempt scoring a run. However the introduction of spin broke the game open through the middle overs as Ronny (4/35) and Molly (3/22) ran through the Roseville lineup with a relentless display of spin bowling from both ends. A late run out and one more wicket to Wigs saw Roseville all out for 107 in the 40th over.

Daz and newly appointed opener Blaney quickly settled into a rhythm as they went about chasing down the runs with a potential bonus point in sight. The boys showed the perfect balance of patience and aggression as they capatilised on some ill-disciplined bowling and cruised to 0/80 inside 15 overs without much risk, before Daz (49) fell just short of a second half-century in as many days.

Tully (11*) joined Blaney (42*) at the crease and looked equally as comfortable, as the pair finished off the chase in the 22nd over to secure an important bonus point victory.

Next match is Round 5, Sunday 15 January vs Lindfield at Acron Oval.

WARRINGAH

1-131 (25 overs)
Brady 40*, Allsop 40*, Kelly 40*

BALMAIN-SOUTH SYDNEY

130 (33 overs)
Allsop 1-18, Brady 1-22

WARRINGAH WON BY 9 WICKETS.

Next match is Round 7, Sunday 8 January vs Hawkesbury at Frank Gray Oval.

WARRINGAH

SRI LANKA LIONS CLASSICS

133 (34.1 overs)
