December Round Wrap 2

December Round Wrap 2
Welcome to the December 2nd edition - the second of three to come out just before we break for Christmas. Another weekend of Australian sun meant plenty of MIG action on the field. There's a lot to get through, so we'll get straight into it. Remember first though...

Don't worry about RSVPing - just show up! We'll see you there.

LAST TIME...

The second edition of December sees a round of onedayers! The countdown to Christmas is on, and the Shires cricket action is piquing interest for the upcoming BBL. To preview the round - the main grades were against tough opponents from the west Auburn, a match against Mounties in the Metro Cup, a match against long time rivals Sri Lankan Lions in the Classics, and Lane Cove in the U24s while Masters and 5th Grade rested. So the last time we played against these teams...
- Last year's 1st Grade were beaten by Auburn (183 vs 9-226) despite Greeney's 52* and Rocket's 2-16 (10)
- 2nd Grade side suffered a similar fate (109 vs 9-240), where Blaney's 4-55 went in vein
- 3rd Grade were also comfortably defeated (9-209 vs 4-210) regardless of the effort of Chappo and Richo (55 a piece)
- 4th Grade suffered their only defeat of the season (148 vs 5-151) with little to write home about individually
- Last year's Metro team won in a thriller against Mounties (214 vs 9-213) thanks to a whole team effort, but also Waz's 3-16 and Senta's 58
- As you know, this is our first 5th Grade side in some time, so there's no previous result to reference here.
- The Classics' chaps haven't played the Sri Lankan Lions since their close loss 2 years ago, so a bit to avenge there
- Finally Frankies are used to beating rivals Roseville, but the schedule didn't work out for a match last year, but the year before the boys got the job done (9-164 vs 83) thanks to Parko's 4-9!

So a round of results that we're keen to overturn against Auburn, and a few other matches we're eager to get the most out of.  Here we go!

Warringah

178 (46 overs)
Ahmed 63, Mahajan 32*, Conners 21

Auburn

134 (33.4 overs)
Ahmed 4-51, Mahajan 3-32, Vinter 1-0

Warringah won by 44 runs.

1st grade round 7 saw the boys up against second placed Auburn, uncomfortable for some being so far away from the beaches. Hamish won the toss on what appeared to be a decent track, a bit of grass on top but certainly firm enough to have a stick. The skipper departed in the first over, not the ideal start for the MiG. Daz and Tully weathered the early swing from the white pill and started to build the foundations. Daz (63) the highlight of the batting innings, playing freely to most parts of the ground. Unfortunately, we lost consistent wickets without troubling the scorers -and yet again found ourself scratching at 6/100ish. Coach Steve steadied the ship ticking the board along nicely, and when Ronit joined him the target was to get to 150. Ronit ended up 32 off 33 balls to round out the mig score of 178. A fantastic knock from rocket on his birthday, putting the boys in a position we were confident to defend.

Auburn came out of the blocks at a million miles an hour. Not a whole lot of technique, but some serious ball striking saw them fly to 30 off the first 3 overs. Daz and Wiggers bowled exceptional line and length with not a whole lot of luck- stopping the bleeding at 2/52. Ronit, Wiggers, Daz and Molly bowled in short partnerships- Daz 10 overs 4/51, Ronit 10 overs 3/32 the highlights. Our fielding standard was high yet again as we strangled Auburn for runs, forcing them to make mistakes. We ended up rolling Auburn for 134 in 33 overs. 6 points for the good guys and on the fringe of the top 6.. bring on Lane Cove next week!! Man of the match.. the birthday boy Ronit!

Warringah

51 (23.2 overs)
Powe 9, Thompson 8, Outred 8

Auburn

3-55 (14.1 overs)
Parkinson 1-6

Warringah lost by 7 wickets.

Match report (unlikely) to come - who would relive this one?

Warringah

5-263 (50 overs)
Broome 88, Verma 50, Bourke 32*

Auburn

8-264 (49.1 overs)
Kuchel 2-36, Hatvany 2-62, Bourke 1-36

Warringah lost by 2 wickets.

After the epic drive to Auburn, Harry and Sticky made the Auburn bowlers pay. A phenomenal effort with both lads pumping some monster bombs. After putting on 140 Auburn wriggled back into the contest, cleaning up Harry 50, Chickpea 3, Charlie 0, Stickey 88 and Reg 25. Bourkey 32* and Kel 29* guided the ship to a respectable 265. Auburn went out hard before Coops took the big dog down.

Vic followed up with the other opener. Then their number four, the danger man came in. He made things look easy and swung the game in their favour before Coops took a ripper off Kuchey. After Bourkey and Kuchey bowled in a fantastic partnership the game was  well in our favour. Auburn lost 5-47 to be 8-203.  Needing 63 off 48 balls the Auburn tail looked out of their depth. However the young number 8, to his credit played a flawless innings (37 not out) and guided them home. Fair play to a great little innings.

Despite some late dramas the game was played in a great spirit and well done to the b3asts.

Warringah

3-131 (29.3 overs)
Akbarally 49*, Norton 42, Seward 25

Auburn

130 (34 overs)
Martin 3-18, Rowse 3-35, Buchanan 2-43

Warringah won by 7 wickets (+bonus point).

After consecutive disappointing weeks for the club and 4th grade, the boys were ready to turn things around. Kev Davies won or lost the toss, nobody ever knows, but we would be bowling for the first 50 overs on a green Frank Gray wicket, which as always, is suitable for batting. Zac Buchannan and Harry Burke took the new ball and troubled the top order of Auburn. Zac was nipping the ball off the seam and finding some serious carry through to Kev behind the stumps. Soon enough, he found the edge and Kev took the catch with a little bobble. At the other end, Harry Burke was bowling excellent, finding his line and length, not letting the Auburn top order get settled. Harry finished with 1/6 off his 6 overs (4 maidens) and Zac 2/45 off 9. The middle order of Auburn began to free the arms and play some shots, using the quick outfield to their advantage. Lewis Beard (1/26 off 6) bowled well in this period, forcing a loose shot and grabbing a handy wicket. Bill Martin and Ben Rowse came on to clean up the tail. Bill (3/18 off 5) bowled a tight line with a bit of variation which frustrated the Auburn batsman who were showing minimal patience to the majority of our well rounded attack. Rowsey (3/35 off 8) as always bamboozled some confused Auburn batsman with his leg-spin. Despite being hit for a couple boundaries, the lack of singles off his bowling meant it wasn’t long until Rowsey figured out the batsman and had them walking off to the sheds. Overall, some excellent bowling paired with good standards in the field saw Auburn all out for 129.

Veehan Akbarally and Noah Kasmar opened the chase. Noah got out early, and it was up to Toby Seward (primed after a rip n tear at schoolies) and Veehan to settle the nerves and establish a platform for a comfortable run chase. Toby and Veehan started strong, finding the gaps with their shots, however a change of bowling in the Auburn attack saw the green men get bogged down with dots. Toby got out for a well made 25, and club veteran Brad Lewis, back for a cameo for the MIGs, shortly followed Toby back to the sheds. In came Mitch Norton, fresh and ready after a schoolies visit to Noosa. Mitch played with intent early on in his innings, dispatching the young leg spinner who had begun to settle with his line and length. Mitch got out for a well made 43 off 33 balls, giving us a glimpse at a bonus point victory. Captain Kev was quick to send out the message, 11 off 2 overs to grab the bonus point. Lewis (4*) and Veehan acted accordingly, taking a boundary each to finish off the game. Veehan finished with a lofted shot over mid-on to end on a well made 49*, falling short of a deserved fifty but earning the green men a bonus point victory.

Warringah

219 (49.5 overs)
Z O'Sullivan 36, Rochford 33, Burgess 27

Mounties

132 (44 overs)
Higgins 3-15, Mulcahy 2-25, Evans 1-1

Warringah won by 87 runs.

The pitch at Mike Pawley Oval was well grassed  but reasonably hard. Outfield the quickest I’ve seen it. Won toss, batted. Yet again a new look side with a number of St Aug boys given a run. Harry O’Sullivan (12) and Ollie Goldsworthy (10) opened up against a fresh pace but wayward opening attack. A good little leg cutter caught Ollie in front and Harry was possibly unlucky to be given out down the leg side. Luke Burgess (27) looked good again until he was caught in front. Zac O’Sullivan (36) enjoyed his time at number 4 and looked the part scoring at a decent rate against reasonable bowling. Myles Kapoor was undone by their leggie. At 4/93 after 32 it could go either way. Robbie Tipton (19) coming off some good form in u17s reps looked in ominious form until he was caught to make it 5/116. Dustin Labador (24) found the gaps (or at least picked out their worst fielders) and worked the ball well with Zac until they both went in quick order. Evans (0) was trapped in front so at 8/163 and about 12 overs to go I was hopeful that we could achieve the first of 2 goals…bat our 50. Archie Rochford (33, sorry Arch I couldn’t find the extra 5 runs to make it 38) batted sensibly and made sure we didn’t leave a lot of balls out there. He was very well supported by Ryan Osbourne (19) and it was very pleasing seeing them reel in their natural desire to have a crack and instead milk the bowling. Ryan fell to a sharp catch and Ollie Higgins finished up 3no when Archie just failed to clear mid off in the 49th over. This gave us 221.

They bowled 36 wides. That was goal 2 – bowl less wides than opposition. Maybe I should have made it clearer – bowl a lot less wides than opposition may have worked. We threw down 25 of the little suckers in an average display of control. However we were never threatened bowling them out for 132. All bowlers got amongst it with Ollie Higgins threatening to do a Boland in his first over but only picked up a double wicket maiden. Ryan and Tyler (two each) bowled tightly, especially Tyler to ensure some early wickets. Ollie and Robbie kept the pressure on. Archie’s radar wasn’t spot on but extracted some turn, Evans did his boring usual, Burgo send down some neat stuff, Ollie Goldsworthy couldn’t quite keep his net form up. Blacktown’s lower order dug in for little purpose. They were reminded there was a beach 5 mins away and plenty of daylight left but they were intent on hanging around showing zero intent. Tyler finally picked up the last one with a neat catch behind the wicket to Dusty and we walked away comfortable winners. Unsure where we sit on the table but we should be well placed with 3 wins on the trot.

BYE

Next match Saturday 17 December vs Mt Pritchard-Southern Districts at Greenway Park 1.

Warringah

1-110 (21.4 overs)
Ahmed 49, Powe 42*, Moffat 11*

Roseville

107 (39.2 overs)
Mahajan 4-35, Molyneux 3-22, Wigney 2-9

Warringah won by 9 wickets .

Following a disappointing result last week, the boys back at Weldon ready to make amends and put the rest of the competition back on notice, inspired by the leadership of stand-in skipper Tully.

Bowling first, Daz and Wiggers (2/9) started well, making scoring difficult for the Roseville openers before an early wicket had the score at 1/8. Not much changed as Vinter (0/15) entered the attack, settling in nicely to a consistent channel and bowling his 10 overs straight for just 15 runs. Despite only having taken one wicket at the first drinks, the 2 run per over scoring rate - with most of those coming off the edge of the bat - reflected a session well and truly dominated by the MIG.

Some pretty boring cricket continued after drinks as Roseville stuck with their defensive route and seemed defiant to even attempt scoring a run. However the introduction of spin broke the game open through the middle overs as Ronny (4/35) and Molly (3/22) ran through the Roseville lineup with a relentless display of spin bowling from both ends. A late run out and one more wicket to Wigs saw Roseville all out for 107 in the 40th over.

Daz and newly appointed opener Blaney quickly settled into a rhythm as they went about chasing down the runs with a potential bonus point in sight. The boys showed the perfect balance of patience and aggression as they capatilised on some ill-disciplined bowling and cruised to 0/80 inside 15 overs without much risk, before Daz (49) fell just short of a second half-century in as many days.

Tully (11*) joined Blaney (42*) at the crease and looked equally as comfortable, as the pair finished off the chase in the 22nd over to secure an important bonus point victory.

Next match Sunday 18 December vs Balmain-South Sydney at Weldon Oval.

Warringah

8-137 (40 overs)
Harris 32*, Waddington 28, Melchiore 22*

Sri Lanka Lions Classics

133 (34.1 overs)
Allsop 3-23, Jones 2-5, Melchiore 2-40

Warringah won by 2 wickets.

Match report to come.
