LAST TIME...

The first edition of December sees a round split by the last week of November and officially the start of the countdown to Christmas. In the main grades we faced reigning Club Champions Burwood, a Grand Final rematch against Mosman in the Metro Cup, two rounds in the Tim Creer Cup (aka 5th grade) with Georges River and Roseville, Lane Cove in our Classics, Old Ignatians in our Masters, and old rivals Epping in the Under 24s (Frankies!!!) competition. Let's recap our last matches against these teams:
- Last year's 1st Grade lost out to the Briars (9-181 vs 5-215) with runs and wickets shared in a team effort
- The 2021 2nd Grade side defeated the eventual premiers Burwood (204 vs 9-193) with Colyer's 80 and Parko's 3-for showing their mettle
- 3rd Grade were comfortably defeated by Burwood (185 vs 6-186) despite Kale's 79 and 2-26 solo effort
- 4th Grade were run out victors (6-221 vs 58) with Chick's 83 and Gabe's 5-14 leading the way in the round 1 Grand Final rematch
- Last year's Metro team last played Mosman in the Grand Final, so let's revisit that 6-167 vs 146 win with Sentarou smashing 39, and Kuchey backing up his unbeaten 31 with 3-34
- As you know, this is our first 5th Grade side in some time, so there's no previous result to reference here.
- Our Masters' side's draw didn't line up against Old Ignatians last year, so this will be a fresh match up for them this year
- The Classics' chaps had a similar story, with Lane Cove not on their dance card last year
- Finally Frankies are used to beating rivals Epping, and did so comfortably last meetin (200 vs 110) thanks to Kale's 77 and Ronit's 4-25

So a mixed bag of results - but most importantly two wins against the powerhouse Burwood. Warringah will always be ready to fight hard in a round against the Briars. Here we go!

Warringah

206 (83.4 overs)
Smith 77*, Colyer 33, Greenland 29

Burwood

300 (78.4 overs)
Ahmed 4-54, Mahajan 2-66, Vinter 2-68

Warringah lost by 94 runs.

Warringah faced Burwood at Weldon in a another two day affair. Hamo winning the toss and elected to bowl, after viewing the green tinge across Weldon’s pitch.

Daz and wigs took the new pill; bowling perfect line and length to the Briars opening sticks without a whole lot of luck. The first breakthrough came from Ollie Vinter, as the batsman missed the ‘loosener’ full toss. Early wickets were key for the MIG, but unfortunately wickets didn’t tumble as quickly as planned. Daz the highlight of the scorebook, with back to back games picking up 4 Burwood scalps. At tea, the score was 5/150- a really good fight back from the boy. The wicket continued to flatten out after the break, with wickets only falling to batsman error. A big shift from bowlers, all bowling 20 overs. (Daz 19 overs, 4/54), (Ronit 21 overs, 2 /66), (Ollie 19 overs, 2/68) and (Wiggers, 15 overs 1/54.) Burwood bowled out for 300 round, in the last over of the days play. Our fielding was exception, energy was high- but the boys were hurting after a long day in the field.

The second day arrived and Weldon looked equally as flat- taking the covers off early morning to begin the baking process. Damo describing the surface as “it needs a stop sign and double white lines”- The perfect day for batting!. Unfortunately not the start the MIG were after, losing the inform skipper in the first over. Greenie and Jarod consolidated in the middle, taking the shine off the ball and looked to have regained control, before Greenie snicking one on the cusp of drinks. The score- 2/75. A few quick wickets after the break bought the middle order in, needed the boys to bat around the new coach Damo (77 off 160 balls). Damo showed his class and experience all day- defending the good balls and punishing the bad balls. It was fantastic to watch him as he put on display what he has been teaching thus far at trainings. Some really good bowling from Burwood had the boys in trouble at 7/160. The decision was made by Hamo- to shut up shop and try starve Burwood from yet another 6 points. Wiggers and Ollie showed some serious grit and determination- Ollie facing 60 balls from the opening bowlers with guys all around the bat. Falling agonising close to the end of play, the MiG were bowled out with 8 minutes left in the day for 203.

Plenty of positives to take away from the game. Onwards and Upwards!

Warringah

83 (36.5 overs) & 5-171 (54.3 overs)
Panchal 32, Kelly 17, Singh 10 & Singh 53*, Bennet 52*, Chapman 25

Burwood

152 (61 overs)
Gupta 4-21, Bennett 2-23, Panchal 2-51

Warringah lost by 6 wickets.

We arrived at Rothwell park on day 1 keen for the challenge that is Burwood. Parko won the toss and we went in to bat.

We struggled to stay out there for very long with the only notable score being Rishi with 32. Disappointing performance with the bat but we weren't too discouraged and went out fired up with the ball.

We opened up with some seamers but it wasn't long before Parko turned to our 3 skillful off spinners to get through their work. Molly (1-25), Rishi (2-51) and Tejas (4-21) bowled beautifully but unfortunately Burwood passed our score, ending the day at 6-120 looking to claim outright points against the next week.

It didn't take us long on Day 2 to dismiss the remaining batsmen with Aiden (2-23) and the spinners making short work of their tail.

The boys showed plenty of ticker in our second batting innings. Singhy (53*) and Aiden (52*) showed class in their partnership denying Burwood any opportunity to claim any extra points.

Warringah

153 (47 overs) & 4-117 (21 overs)
Verma 43, House 27, Cook 25 & Donato 49*, Verma 33, Cook 13*

Burwood

232 (65 overs)
Wilson 3-49, Thompson 2-20, Hatvany 2-43

Warringah lost by 6 wickets.

Round 5 against Burwood was one of the most memorable games in third grade shires history. The first day started with a quick and breezy warm-up. Followed by the good old reliable Donato Ruben, who called correctly and decided to bat on the Frankies M1. Yet again the MIG’s failed to capitalise on a batting paradise. However, Dr Puff Verma Himanshu, Cook Ben and Thompson Seth successfully fought back and gave us an acceptable target to defend.

Chasing 153, Burwood quickly came on the charge and finished the day off with 3 down for 70 odd. Notable mentions to cookie and Wilson Charlie who consistently banged away at a length and proved to get the vital breakthroughs.

Day 2 was a agreeably a roller coaster of emotions. Hatavany Cooper and Sethy tore through the batsman of Burwood restricting them to 7-134. After the drinks break on day 2 the boys were licking there lips having a sniff at a potential victory. But if there’s one thing that everyone know... cricket is a funny game. How the turn tables... before we knew it Burwoods tail crushed us and proceeded to add another 98 runs since drink. Admittedly a poor performance in the proved to be the main factor of losing. In the end our second innings of batting showed the class of Verma, Ruben and Cookie who put on show the correct way to bat.

Warringah

201 (78.3 overs)
Martin 87, Buchanan 46, Kuchel 27

Burwood

8d.-267 (76 overs)
Rochford 3-47, Tipton 2-38, Martin 1-23

Warringah lost by 66 runs.

On the 26th of the 11th, Kev declared it was a fabulous day for some cricket and it was. The sun was shining on Ron Routley oval and there was not a cloud in the sky. Burwood won the toss and chose to bat sending Warringah into the field. Caruso and Zac put together an amazing opening spell that had the Burwood openers in all sorts, creating a few opportunities in the field that were unluckily put down giving the openers a second chance and leaving Burwood 0/38 after 15. First change was Tipton who took the first wicket of the day in his 4th over which was caught by Zac opening a hole in the Burwood defence which Bill quickly took advantage of by taking the outside edge of number 3 and sending him back to the changing room only 3 overs later. Burwood were now on the back foot at 2/48 after 21 overs at the crease. Slowly Burwood began to solidify and take their time bringing a 93-run partnership between the opener and number 4 which was broken by Jimmy in the 56th over. Burwood were then given the order to get a move along as there were only 20 overs left in the day and they had only scored 141 so far in the innings. Rochie was then given the ball to try and break the partnership that had now formed and it worked. Rochie got their number 5 running past a ball with Woody whipping off the bails leaving the score 4/215 after 70. The next over Tipton got straight through the number 6 defence making Burwood 6 down. Zac then whipped one to woody behind the stumps causing another wicket to fall and the Burwood bottom order to start getting nervous. Rochie then in the 74th over of the day got one pulled straight to midwicket where Tipton took the catch which led to Burwoods number 9 coming to the crease. 2 overs later he skies one going for a hack to cow and Rowsey running back takes an amazing catch at mid-on, with Burwood ending the day 8/267.

We returned the following weekend with similar beautiful conditions and prepared for another amazing day of cricket. Burwood declared and were ready for a long day out in the field. Unfortunately in only the second over Burwood struck, bowling Jimmy for a duck. Only 6 overs later Vehaan fell to the same fate on only 9 after a couple of nice shots to get his innings underway. Woody had come in with the plan of the best way to stay in is to score and he did so with Bill consolidating at the other end. But after some nice shots, one went to hand after Woody smoked it back at the bowler and Burwood had their heads up as the score was just 3/18 after 10. Then a great partnership arose as Bill and Kuchel took the game into their own hands. Both batsmen playing some marvellous strokes with the idea in mind that Kev’s orders were to bat the whole day. But finally, in the 30th over there was a slight lapse in concentration and Kuchel got sent back and just didn’t make it to the crease ending a solid 56-run partnership. In the same over Rochie came in and clipped one to gully bringing the score to 5/71. Bill remained in the middle still working the field and putting away the bad ball until Tipton pulled one and got caught at midwicket. Bringing captain Kev in 6 down, after blocking a couple out Kev decided to show Burwood what he was made of hitting a couple over the top but shortly afterwards getting caught on the boundary. The score now 7/93 with Bill still 44*, in came Zac who straight away got off to a flyer by putting a few away in his first couple of balls. Meanwhile, at the other end, Bill brought up his half-century on his 4th-grade debut. The two then played a marvellous innings together until Zac fell 4 short of his half-century after being bowled around the legs by a ball he tried to pull. The score 8/168 the message going out with Caruso was to get through the day and bat out for a draw and both then battened down the hatches and looked solid at the crease until Bill’s stroke play came to an end when he played at one that was a little too wide and it went through to the keeper. So it was up to Rousey and Caruso to bring the team home, with both of them not looking as though they were going to give an inch and the clock ticking down to the end of days play with only 15 minutes left Burwood snuck one past Rousey's defence and a loud shout went up and Rousey was given out LBW. With Warringah falling tantalisingly short of the draw and losing.

Warringah

120 (??? overs) & 9-89 (??? overs)
Whitaker 34, Fanous 25* & Burke 30, Cruickshank 13

Mosman

92 (??? overs) & 3-130 (??? overs)
Bush 3-17, McFarlane 2-17 & Higgins 1-23, Olde 1-25

Warringah won by 3 wickets.

Despite being thoroughly outplayed day 2 Metros did enough on day 1 to get the points v Mosman in our GF rematch. Mosman won the toss on a green tinged pitch that probably wasn’t as hard as it could be. They had a bat and Seb Bush (3/20), back from Japan tour with Aussie schoolboys rugby, rolled the arm over and bowled with fresh pace. He was well supported by the accurate Tyler Mulcahy (2/17) and we had a couple of early ones.

Mosman didn’t get any partnerships going and with Higgins, Evans, Cruickshank senior (2fa) and Junior all getting amongst them we rolled them for 92. We had the English lads Murray Whitaker (34) and Charlie Fanous (27) batt well for us in a run chase that never really got out of 2nd gear. After a middle order collapse Evans went in at 5/70. And some lusty blows all but did the job. Naturally he couldn’t hang in there till we passed them which left Seb to hit the winning runs. We finished the day 7/109, with the intention of hopefully adding 30 or 40 more day 2.

The 3 wickets fell quickly and we were all out 120. Mosman then batted very well to be 2/170. All bowlers copped a bit but to be fair they batted well and we bowled and fielded fairly poorly. Some easy catches were spilt which allowed them to really progress and give us a target of 141 off 36. Very sporting.

We were poor in our 2nd innings. Wickets were lost easily with little to no intent. Our tail hung in and I was very pleased with the commitment shown by Harry Burke (30), Tyler and a couple of others in their role as well. Luke Macfarlane reluctantly came out at #11 with a back injury that prevented much movement but he was stoic and held out the last 5 balls and we limped home 9/89. We were fairly good day 1, fairly average day 2. Mosman had players who took 6fa, 5fa and 110no. We had a 3fa and a thirty. But they lost somehow. Lots of improvement needed from metros as we head into a string on one dayers.

Warringah lost by 5 wickets.

The Frankie’s boys entered their round 2 clash against Epping full of confidence after a dominant first round win. Winning the toss we batted first and never looked back. Losing a wicket in the first over and then periodically from then we were 5-30 odd at the first drinks break. A small partnership between Tully (23) and Johnno (14) stabilised proceedings but Epping yet again struck, removing both sticks. Blaney and Moly (20) yet again stemmed the flow and seemingly changed the momentum however Blane had a ball go underground and was dismissed after a brilliant fight back. Vint and moly nearly saw out our 50 but mol was caught on the boundary and we were dismissed for 94.

Coming out of the break full of fight, Daz (2-19) and Vint (1-29) did a brilliant job up top and a run out from jarod saw us right in the game at the first drinks with Epping at 4-40. The second sesh our momentum continued with Ronny grabbing an early wicket to put Epping in a bit of clad panic at 5-50. Eppings skipper and their No. 6 steadied the ship and saw them home as they passed our score 5 down in the 34th over.

A brilliant fight in the field but we never had enough runs. A much needed reset for our lads and we look forward to the Roseville game this Sunday.
