February 2024 Round Wrap

February 2024 Round Wrap
Welcome to the latest edition of the MIG Round Wrap. Last round was massive for the club - we played Pennant Hills in all grades, except for Metro who played Sydney Uni, Masters who played Strathfield and Classics who took on Old Ignatians. We absolutely dominated that one, going down in just one match, which leaves us in prime position for our first club championship since 1996/1997! See the graphic below.
Inevitably, to finish ahead of the mighty eleven time reigning club champs Burwood, we will have to beat them. The final round of the season is Warringah vs. Burwood to decide the club championship! Let's GOOOO MIGSSSSSSS!!!!!

Progress has begun in the final round for the main grades, plus a few other results. This is how it looks with just one weekend to go in the regular season:

Before we get to recapping the action, a massive congratulations to club stalwart Simon ‘Cliffy’ Lyon who has recently been selected to represent Australia in the over 70s World Cup! Cliffy will be travelling with the squad over to the UK this July & August. He is one of only two New South Welshmen in the squad, showing how special this selection is. We are very proud to have one of our very own MIG selected. Go Australia and go Cliffy!

Warringah won [outright] by 10 wickets.

Round 12 saw Warringah away to bottom of the table pennant hills, with the MIG In search of a bonus point victory. With the weather being fairly wet through out the week it was no surprise that the pennant hills Oval looked very damp upon inspection, and as a result the first ball was delayed by 30 minutes. With this in mind skipper hamish Ferguson didn’t hesitate when he won the toss and sent pennant hills into bat hoping to make the most of the bowling conditions. With the sun finally appearing, Day and park johnson took the new ball, running into the wind and up the hill pat day claimed the first wicket of the match as the ball ballooned up to Barney at first slip. From then on wickets fell in quick succession as park johnson removed the number 3 with a genuine edge straight into the hands of wicket keeper Jack chick, pat day with his tail up then dismissed the number 4 being caught by Reegan with pat claiming his second of the match. Backing up pat from the other park johnson then claimed his second wicket of the innings by bowling the left handed number 4 through the gate, with the four quick wickets by the opening seamers the score stood at 4-19 with the MIG looking to keep the hosts score to a minimum in hunt for the outright victory. The fifth wicket was slightly more difficult to come by as the pennants hills opening batsman managed to clear the rope multiple times, however with the outfield being very long and sponge there was no real value for shots with the scoreboard not being hurt as a result. The 5th and 6th wickets fell in a similar manner to each other as pat day coolly whipped the bails off as he claimed two run outs which were assisted by the skipper hamish and reegan. The score stood at 55-6 after pat day’s contribution to 4 of the wickets leaving the MIG in a commanding position within the first 2 hours of the match. With four wickets to take one of which being the hard hitting opening batsman the ball was thrown to Matt Munro, from his first ball Munro looked like taking wickets as he managed to generate turn and bounce Which more than troubled the pennant hills batsman. With another bowling change Shane cook turned his arm over and bowled very economically as he created chances throughout his spell. With Munro building pressure he promptly dismissed the stubborn opening batsman for 39 as munro bowled him while trying to sweep the kiwi off spinner. With the score 59-7 it was one way traffic at pennant hills oval, with three wickets remaining munro was well and truly on a role as he dismissed the remaining 3 wickets swiftly with the kiwi finishing with figures of 5.3 over 5 runs 4 wickets. Pennant hills finished on 73, and with plenty of time left in the day Warringah were keen to Chase the total and secure a first innings win on the first day.

With the wicket playing much better than initially expected the MIG where confident they could chase the small total which had been set for them with the skipper hamish and Cooky striding out to the crease to face the new ball. The run chase didn’t exactly go to plan as we lost skipper hamish early for 1, cooky looked good from ball one playing aggressively unfortunately he didn’t get much value for his shots as he slapped three beautiful cover drives just short of the rope slowing up as a result of the outback style outfield, continuing in his aggressive style Shane played one shot too many as he was bowled for 10. This left sheahan and park johnson at the crease who had a small partnership of 25 which Included a beautiful lofted straight drive from reegan who dismissively hit the off spinner for 6, shortly after sheahan and park johnson both fell for 13 and 14 leaving the MIG 40-4. With the run chase not exactly going to plan This brought barney and Aidan to the crease and from that moment on Warringah battled back and were soon back in the driving seat as Aidan and Barney batted superbly as they began to hit the pennant hills bowling attack to all corners of the ground with the pair batting aggressively as they both naturally do while also playing intelligent cricket. The pair put on 123 for the 5th wicket partnership with Aidan doing what he’s done so well all season by the dismissing the bowling attack over the rope’s multiple times whilst also taking singles and rotating the strike when necessary. Barney clearly was feeling well rested after his trip to Japan as he launched numerous maximums throughout his innings over the ropes leaving the MIG 163-4. The skipper then declared giving the boys a comfortable lead, with Aidan finishing on a run a ball 52 and Sam 69. The fantastic partnership which had too many great shots to mention them all left Warringah in a dominant position at the end of our first innings. With 9 overs left in the day the MIG were looking for some early wickets to go into day 2 however pennant hills battled hard as they finished day 1 25-0.

As the men in green arrived at pennant hills oval on day two the conditions where very different to the previous Saturday with the sun coating the ground and the outfield being considerably shorter. The first over of the day went to 1st grade debutant Kev Godfrey who bowled a impeccable line and length while constantly challenging the batsmen with his big out-swingers. Warringah toiled away but struggled to pick up any early wickets as we missed a few big chances, the debutant Godfrey struck first after he’d frustrated the Hard hitting opening batsman who sliced the ball to deep cover for the first catch of the innings. Once the first wicket fell Warringah started to turn the screw, as park johnson then took 2 quick wickets to take the score to 58-3. With spin being so successful in the first innings the kiwi pair of Munro and sheahan took control from both ends as the pair ripped through the pennant hills batting lineup. Both sheahan and Munro bowled economically and gave them nothing while taking wickets regularly, assisted by some good catching in the slips and Sheahan taking a good catch at short leg off his fellow kiwi Munro the MIG restricted pennant hills to 92. The innings belonged to sheahan and Munro who bowled exceptionally as a pair with Munro finishing with 4 wickets for 13 runs and sheahan finishing with 3 wickets for 11 runs leaving Warringah to chase 3 runs in the final innings of the match. With 3 runs to chase Sam Barnet and Jack chick strolled to the crease, following on from his excellent 69 not out in the first inning Sam took the first ball. like he has all season sam calmly knocked off the 3 runs in the first over, while being well supported by Jack chick from the non strikers end who finished naught not out with the boys agreeing it was one of the best supporting roles we’d seen all season and with that the MIG had secured a outright victory over pennants hills wrapping the game up by 2 o’clock on day 2 securing the bonus point as they hunt for finals cricket. A special mention has to go to Munro for his excellent bowling display across the two days along with Sam and Aidan with their exceptional batting partnership to take the game away from pennant hills.

K Broome 152*, L Johnson 42, T Gupta 19

Pennant Hills

257
F Holdsworth 5-68, T Gupta 3-74, R Outred 2-69

Warringah won by 5 wickets.

Warringah hosted penno in the penultimate round game of the season. With the season admittedly being over as a grade, there were massive club champs implications in the fixture.
The mig donned the field first, starting perfectly having the pumas 3/5 courtesy of 2 to the import, and one to primary school sensation Roy.  The pumas then proceeded to lock in, putting 150odd on for the fourth wicket. Fearless leader Teej then started a marathon from the clubhouse end, breaking the partnership then proceeding to grab a few more of his own of his 25 overs. Must be mentioned bowling through a shoulder injury, not being able to create any turn or bounce, much like cult hero kuch. Penno rounded out on 250, about par with their tail kicking on more so than expected. Credits to Redford for cleaning up half of the team with his 3rd 5fa for the season. The green were left with 9 to bat, the day concluding in a diabolical manner, Billy chasing one getting caught at point.

Day two arrived and got off to a shakey start, losing Kas to another awry stroke. Lachlan and Broomey went about chasing the runs down, getting some away working the score up last 100, then onto 140 before the loss of Lachlan with more heinous stroke play. Broomey, ever the cool head, kept smoking them, riding his luck when needed but in the end being too good for the opposition bringing up a big ton. Ably supported by Motty, then teej, the green ticked the runs down and ended up taking home the points 5 down, Broomey with a cool 150odd red. Crazy scenes.

Warringah

6-180
D Labador 85, B Martin 42*, L Richardson 27

Pennant Hills

M Kuchel 3-28, C McKay 3-35, Z Buchanan 2-16

Warringah won 4 wickets.

It was a beautiful sunny day at Pennant hills Ern Holmes oval despite the previous days of dreaded rain. Things were looking positive until the boys took the covers off and there happened to be several holes that leaked the weeks rain through 2 layers of covers and the hessian. So we embraced ourselves for a tense couple hours of watching 1 st grade ( go see match report to find out details), while the Pennant Hills team sat with leaf blowers and other drying machines, almost as if this had happened in the past and they were prepared. Eventually at around 3 the pitch was dry enough to play on, and we won the toss electing to bowl with the pitch thought to do bits off the wicket. This was not the case and the boys had to really put a lot of effort in to get the first wicket bowled by Matt Kuch and stumped by Dustin after a 93 opening stand, followed quickly with an LBW from Bill Martin and without adding to their score the bloke who hit 85 was also removed by Seth and caught on the boundary by Toby. The last wicket that fell was bowled by Cal McKay and caught by Toby finishing the day with 4-126.

Our day 2 starts with athletics trainings being practiced in the field right up until there was 30 min left of play. After covers being patched the pitched looked like it wasn’t going to do as much as the previous week, however this was the opposite of what happened. The first two wickets bowled by Cal Mckay were back of a length popping up taking the gloves of both batsman and was well received by the cordon. From there on there wasn’t much fight back from Pennant hills scratching their way to 177, due to well performed bowling spells from Zac Buchanan 2-16-11 and Matt Kuch 3-32-12. This would turn out to be a competitive score due to the match turning into a 50 over batting innings and a slow outfield. The innings started with Toby getting a first ball duck, bringing Luke Richo out who accompanied Dustin Labador who during the week was doing burnouts on his e-bike and ended up injuring his ankle. Even with his injured ankle he pressed on to make a blistering 85 from 111 balls hitting 3 sixes and 6 fours which was well supported by Richo who made 27 from 95, making a 100 run partnership between the two. The run rate was rising so out went Bill Martin who cruised to 42 from 70 helping Dusty who was runout looking for a quick single which was unexpected stopped by the bowler. The match was won with 2 overs to go and contributions from Lachie Coy and Zach Buchanan to finish the innings with Bill.

A Caruso 5-20, S Roche 2-7, C Wilson 2-14 &
C Wilson 3-25, A Caruso 3-40, A Boulton 1-17

Warringah won [outright] by 6 wickets.

On the back of a comprehensive win against Balmain, the people's grade returned to Frank Gray aiming to get another against Balmain. Warringah found themselves bowling first on what seemed like a usual, flat Frank Gray wicket. The first over got sent down by Caruso, and although the Penno hills opener looked solid for 4 balls, one of the almighty barbeques occurred on the 5th ball, as the non-striker found himself sleeping, leaving his companion stranded in the middle of the pitch. The second wicket partnership proved difficult for the MIG to break as they played some good shots along with loosish bowling, before Caruso struck again, thanks to a good catch from Burkey, and smart field placement from Kev. That wicket saw the floodgates open, as the next over Roche took 2 wickets. With the wind behind them, Caruso and Wilson cleaned up the tail, Caruso taking another 3 bringing up a magnificent 5fa, and Wilson finishing with 2 well-deserved wickets. Bowling Penno out for 42 in 18 overs, saw the MIG in before tea.

Norto and Chapo took the attack to them straight away punishing any loose balls to all parts of the boundary. Norto innings finished on 89, featuring one of the worst dropped catches ever where the bowler and cover ran into each other, no calls, both looking at the ball. With Norto gone this brought in Boults though without his pads, as he had trusted that Norto would last the over before we declared. 3* from Boults and a well-made Chappo 60* saw a MIG declaration at 150, with the hope of winning by an innings in a day. This was absolutely put to bed as the Penno batters tied down to finish the day 3/ 40, needing 70 for us to bat again.

The second day started exactly as the first had ended, the Penno batters defensive, as MIG continued on their search for a wicket. After a series of plays and misses and defying shouts, Wilson was able to swing a beauty through the Penno number 1 who was on his way for a solid 50. This was followed with Rowsey's first ball, where the Penno number 4 on 50 chipped it up 10 m wide of Roche at mid on, who picked it up very very late, with most already doubting if the catch would be made. He stuck out a hand in a dive, and the ball stuck in the mits. Penno batting saw them out for a fighting 200. Wickets to McCraken, Caruso, Wilson, and Charlie.

The MIG were back in late on day 2, chasing 70 with around 20 overs left in the day, desperately searching for that 2 innings win. This saw 4 wickets fall from rash shots, and dodgy umpiring, but courtesy of a quickfire 46 from Boults (that included a wide Andrew Tye style last ball to rob him of a 50) brought the MIG home 4 down.

Securing a 2 innings win, the people's grade return to Frank Gray next Saturday, aiming for glory with a win guaranteeing them a minor premiership.

Round 12

Warringah

9-252
H McCracken 91, T Walker 37*, V Akbarally 34

Gordon

238
Z Buchanan 5-43, S Thompson 2-32, H McCracken 1-33

Warringah won by 14 runs.

We got to Mike Pawley and it looked like the standard pitch that it is. We batted first, with Vehaan and our captain Stu leading the way. After a good start from the pair, with a few quick boundaries from Vehaan, he was caught on 34, after a good and handy knock. Seth then came in, batting with Stu, as they looked to turn the strike over and hit the bad balls. Not long after, Stu was given out LBW, and Zach came out. After a few more singles, and a very big six from Zach into the tree on the far side, Zach was out, caught. Will then came out with Seth, as they kept looking to turn the strike over, and punish the loose ball. Seth was then dismissed in the 25th over, and Jack came out. In the next over, Jack was unfortunately caught, and Warringah were in trouble. Zach Buchanan came out to bat with Will, who didn’t take long to start hitting the ball hard, and to all parts of the ground. Shortly after, Will was caught and out came Harry. The pair formed a great partnership involving many boundaries all around the ground, before Zach was dismissed for a handy 31 off 40 including 3 fours and 1 six. Out came Tom, who also took no time, as well as Harry, to get going. The two started hitting some big balls and flipped the game around very quickly. Harry started to punish most balls, no matter where they were pitched. Harry was run out on the second last ball, with the best knock of the game, 91 off 76 including 4 fours and 6 sixes, great work harry! Warringah finished with 252 from our 50 overs, which was very impressive considering we were 6-70. We had our usual lunch break, warm ups, and went back out to rip into gordon early. Zach Buchanan opened the bowling and started tidily with Ollie. It was not until the 5th over where Zach took the first wicket, caught by Stu. Gordon were putting up a good fight and were going along the run rate, and in the 15th over our next wicket was taken, caught behind. The middle overs were hard for Warringah and Gordon capitalised, before Seth took a wicket in the 28th over. Gordon followed the run rate all game, which came down to a nail biter ending, but with some tight bowling at the death, warringah managed to pull through. Another great performance in the game from Zach who took 5-43 off 9, and 2 wickets for seth. It was a close game, but in the end it was well fought from both teams, but we just pulled through, bowling gordon out for 238 after 49 overs.

Round 13

Warringah

242
P White 81, A Woodhead 37, W Toohey 26

Sydney Uni Gold

226
H Cruickshank 3-42, P Clift 3-43, G Park 2-52

Warringah won by 16 runs.

After a good win last week sending us top of the ladder, the metro cup lads headed out to USYD to play against Sydney University Gold in a high table clash. With some water on the covers being poured onto the ground and being cleaned up, the MIG were sent into bat after a 15 minute delay. The main focus of the match would be the 40 metre boundary which was just off the centre circle on one side off the pitch. The batting innings started really well with Luke Macfarlane and Patty White targeting the short boundary to get to MIG to 0-50, just before Luke was trapped infront for 20.

Will Toohey joined Patty in the middle for a quick 26 with a 6 over the clubhouse before being bowled just before drinks. During the 3rd wicket partnership, Patty White would bring up a very patient 50 off around 100 balls. Andrew Woodhead would then hit 7 boundaries on his way to 37. A shocking LBW for Zach Dowthwaite first ball followed by Angus Pike sweeping one to square leg for 0 meant the MIG had lost 3/0 just before Patty White was bowed for 81 making the collapse 4/5. However 22* from the skipper Neil Barnett and a couple of 10s from the tail  got the boys to a healthy score of 242 all out. At the end of day 1, we had 2 overs to bowl at the students, and after 4 balls, the USYD opener chopped on off Ollie Fairchild, with them 1/4 after the first day.

The start of day two was looking to be a tough job right from the get go as even the night watchman was scoring freely. Soon after though, Ollie Fairchild got the other opener to chip one to Zach off his pads. The runs kept piling on before the night watchman was finally dismissed by Harley Cruickshank to leave the students 3/75. The USYD skipper then passed 50 before a catch diving forward off his own bowling gave Paul Clift his first. After Giles Park picked up one through the gate, the number 6 and 7 batsmen put on 64 before Harley picked up his 2nd quickly followed by his 3rd. At 7-199, the game looked lost but a big effort in the field and bowling was able to restrict Sydney Uni to 226 with 3 wickets to Harley and Clifty, and 2 wickets each to Giles and Ollie, with a mention to Dan Blacker who was unlucky not to pick up a wicket in a fantastic opening spell. The metros boys keep our spot on the top of the ladder with 2 games to go against weaker opponents. With finals coming closer, the lads will be looking forward to picking up some great wins and individual performances going into the finals.

Congratulations to North West Sydney Hurricanes DCC for winning the Frank Gray Shield Final against Warringah on Sunday at Kanebridge Oval. North West Sydney outplayed Warringah on the day winning the match by 8 wickets. North West Sydney’s Hasindu Sellahewa was awarded the Dave Gilbert Medal as Player of the Match for his innings of 88 runs not out as he braved cramp and the extreme heat to see his team home in their run chase. Round 9

Warringah

8-151
D Brady 42*, "Bucketts" 34, N Gatehouse 17

Strathfield

5-154
"Buckets" 3-30, M Turner 1-13, P Clift 1-18

Warringah lost by 5 wickets.

The Green Men hosted the competition leaders at Frank Gray for an epic Round 9 fixture. The only downside of a home game against Strathfield is the 72 hour slow-cooked goat curry didn’t make the journey. After a shock ‘loss of the toss’ last round, the coin landed back in our favour and we elected to bat. This delighted umpire Mullo’s no end as he joyously declared “You bat, Strathfield will chase the runs in 10 overs, and we can all go home early”. Love Mullo’s. By contrast, DB and Buckets turned out to be a little less delighted by the wicket. BJ reads a wicket like Swahili literature, and this one offered plenty of sideways movement to go with a yorker that hit DB in the helmet. Buckets doesn’t even wear a helmet. The lads had to dig-in early before flicking a switch around the 15 over mark. Since they didn’t give anyone else a turn, it may be difficult to state just what a good job DB (42*) and Buckets (34) did to reach the halfway point ‘none-fa’ with 68 runs on the board. Buckets departed shortly after the break so he could take a quick dip and crack a tinnie at his joint across the creek. DB retired soon after laying the platform. When Al (17) and the ever-reliable ‘Advocates for Frank Gray Oval President’ Grant Hooker departed soon after, and in quick succession, the Green Men were not able to capitalise. There were some very positive signs as runs flowed from Mark Turner’s (14) blade after 20 years and Nick Gatehouse (17) channelled Alfie to get the Greenies to 8-151 off our 40 overs.

A freshly showered, shaved and moisturised Buckets (3-30) took the new ball and made an immediate impact, removing the Strathfield skipper in the first over. Buckey added another big wicket shortly after and a third to have Strathfield 3-43 after 11 overs. We had a sniff, and Edgo and DB bowled superbly without luck. In the absence of scoreboard pressure, the Strathfield 4th wicket pair dug in and played proper tough cricket to first stabilise, and then build a strong position, both batters retiring on 40* in the same over. Cliffty (1-18) bamboozled them for a few overs and Mark Turner (1-18) bowled well, eliciting some late screaming cheers from The Buckets’ Fan Club, represented entirely by granddaughters of his clientele. Eventually, Strathfield passed the Green men in the 33rd over. The Green Men bowled well throughout and were excellent in the field, and despite wanting the win, it was a pleasing performance and we pushed Strathfield harder than any other opposition this season. 2 Rounds remaining and we are aiming for a couple of wins to finish off strong. To all of WCC, give it to the Briars in Round 13 and take home the Club Championship. The Masters lads wish you well. Go Green Men!

Round 9

Warringah

2-179
C O'Brien 31*, D Jeffs 30* , N Barnett 30*

Old Ignatians

8-177
I Jones 3-26, G Allsop 2-26, G park 1-25

Warringah won by 8 wickets.

Under muggy, grey skies that never looked threatening skipper Barnett lost his first toss for the year? and Warringah were asked to bowl. Allsop and DJ (in his new unfamiliar role, how long will this last for skip?) opened the bowling and kept things quite tight early on. A skied opportunity that didn’t go to hand spurred Allsop on to take matters into his own hands (literally) with two spectacular caught and bowleds either side of an over leaving him on a hat trick, however he was unsuccessful in this endeavour. A couple of the Ignatians harder hitting batsman then hit out for a while and a few retired before Jones wily off spinners and Waddos fast medium slow spinners collected a few poles. Ably supported by Giles darts and Cliffys little wobblers Warringah were asked to chase 178 for victory. Rick went out as though he needed to be somewhere in a hurry and batted well before holing out on 13. Waddo provided his usual up tempo game and riding his luck after being dropped on 28 walked off the field with another asterisk next to his name. Barnett and DJ were largely untroubled and kept the scoreboard ticking over to leave us requiring about 90 runs off the remaining 20 overs at the drinks break. DJ shortly after retired on 30 before Barnett joined him in the pavilion with his accustomary red ink next to his name. This left Stolky and O’brien (who fielded very well earlier in the day) to continue Warringahs dominance with the willow. Running extremely well between the wickets (turning ones into twos, twos into threes) and finding the boundary when required to keep the run rate under control both boys also deservedly retired to the sheds. This left Melch (who was heading off to play a second game of cricket in the same day???) and Dean at the crease. With one lusty blow down the ground Dean wrapped things up with in the end a clinical display by this Classics team. A thoroughly enjoyable game against a great bunch of hospitable blokes was rounded off with a few cold refreshments (winning ones always taste better.) A great afternoon had by all, onwards and upwards for the MIG.
